Last one was probably the Pro Mouse in 2000.
I hated the Mighty Mouse with a passion, and everything was just a consequence from there.

That's exactly the one I had in mind. The $29 "Apple Mouse" from between the Pro Mouse and the Mighty Mouse wasn't bad either - a cost-reduced version of the Pro Mouse, good enough.

I guess we can hope for the Oct/Nov event when they announce updates to Mac hardware, that there will be either all new Magic peripherals with USB-C or at least swap out the lightning port for USB-C in the existing peripherals - how hard can it be???

The first generation Apple Pencil isn’t going to see a USB-C revision. Once the iPad mini is updated, they’ll discontinue it since the replacement is already available for the iPad 10th Gen (and with USB-C).

The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models have been discontinued since last year. If they’re still producing them, they aren’t going to revise it. The next SE update will likely have USB-C. The iPhone 15 and Plus are going to replace those two now with the 16.

And also… why are you guys bent out of shape over THESE items (Magic Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad) still featuring Lightning when they’re likely going to refresh these items at some point.

I'm surprised the iPhone accessories have switched over faster than the Mac's which had USB-C way earlier.
What's crazy is that not only have Macs never used Lightning, the Magic peripherals with Lightning were fist launched after Apple had launched the 12" MacBook with USB-C... and the all-USB-C MacBook Pros must have been in the pipeline at that stage.

It's not really a big deal but it is silly.

The Magic Mouse is a pretty lousy product considering that it's from the company that brought the mouse to the masses.
The big problem is that Apple only make one style of mouse, and you really need to choose a mouse that suits you. Fortunately there's plenty of third party choice - and its now only the iMac that comes with a bundled Magic Mouse (I'd recommend taking the opportunity to get a Magic Trackpad for 50 bucks, instead - even if you sell it on).

It's subjective but, personally, the only Apple input devices out of history I'd give desk space to are the current Magic Trackpad (impressive - doesn't quite replace a mouse for me, but its worth trying) and the ~2010 era wired Aluminium chiclet keyboard (the Magic version changed the keys, even if they weren't butterfly, and wrecked it). The Mac mouse was only "best" while it was the only mouse...

Mind you, some people even liked the infamous hockey-puck mouse, so there's no accounting for taste.

Yes. When Apple introduced lightning, they described it as a superior competitor to USB. It could encapsulate USB, but also go beyond it. Then they promptly did nothing with it for years, and the competition passed them by. Typical Apple.
Except... they played a significant role in the development of USB-C and Thunderbolt (the claim they invented USB-C and gave it to USB-IF is dubious, but they certainly had a seat on the USB-IF, contributed engineers to the development and co-developed Thunderbolt with Intel).

...and they pretty much pioneered the use of USB-C on laptops (arguably before the market wad really ready, mainly succeeding in creating a huge market for "waah! give me my old ports back" docks) - everywhere but phones, tablets and small peripherals where a replacement for microUSB was desperately needed... Probably because of all the income from Lightning and MFi licensing...

First gen Apple Pencil is available for the 10th gen iPad only, despite it being USB-C, it still has compatibility with first gen Pencil over the Lightning adapter and USB-C cable. They have it basically in case you want tilt pressure sensitivity on the Apple Pencil, the USB-C Pencil does not have tilt pressure sensitivity. The iPad Mini is currently with USB-C and not compatible with first gen Pencil, you either get the USB-C Pencil or you get the gen 2 Pencil. It's confusing!

The iPhone 14/Plus was not discontinued, it continues as the cheaper iPhone option (above the SE and below the 15). The iPhone 14 Pro was discontinued last year.

I think the Magic Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad will all go USB Type C by October 2024. Reason: they will be part of the Mac mini refresh.
yes, this will be final switch over to USB-C for peripherals. They will continue to sell some older lightning product for a couple years to support older devices.

Separately, I wonder if we will see USB-A dropped from the Mac Studio/Pro M4 next year. That would close off the switch to USB-C for devices.

I think getting rid of USB Type A is possible, but I think given the size of the Mac Studio, probably not.
