Upgrading the iPhone 14 with USB-C was not a big engineering challenge. Why wait for the end of 2024 EU deadline?

I hope this transition to USB-C will be an occasion for Apple to fix the mess they created on the 10th gen iPad with proper Apple Pencil 2 support instead of a weird adapter

I hope they offer an "AirPods 4" with USB-C. Some of us do not prefer silicone tips. It's frustrating that the "regular AirPods" are treated like a "cheap" product when they're really just a different form factor...

how bout redesigning the mouse from scratch along with the port change….

It's hard to think that the Magic Mouse 2 is the best they can do. There has to be a more ergonomic model they can come up with. Or how about a keyboard with a backlight?

Yet the fact that they could've come up with a new mouse design or a backlit keyboard years ago and still haven't tells me it may never happen. Apple keeps desktops around for people who need them, but they're not where innovation is happening. A part of me thinks that things like the mouse design, the keyboard design, and even the Mac Mini design will never change.

Now that Apple has actually done it, I suspect that passion is quickly evaporating and will be near silent within weeks.

Standing ovation to you, sir. Your message was spot on.

Not Invented Here syndrome is a cancer that Apple has had for forty years. Sticking a knife in Lightning is the biggest single blow to that nonsense since Apple stopped trying to make proprietary video connectors happen with the death of ADC.

I would love for Apple to use this as an opportunity to make a brand new mouse or two. I have to use a vertical mouse so I'm not holding out hope that I could ever use an Apple mouse as my daily driver, but there are many improvements that could make to the now-ancient Magic Mouse. Imagine, for example, Touch ID built into the mouse.

I don't have a problem that the connector has switched to USB-C. However, there are still a lot of us out there with lightning connectors, and there will be for some time to come. I was going to purchase a MagSafe Battery Pack for my iPhone 13 Mini within the next couple of months. Now Apple has suddenly discontinued it, without replacing it with a USB-C version. I will have scramble to get one now before they are sold out, if I still want one. I don't see why these Lightening accessories have to be discontinued suddenly just because the connector has changed on the newest model phones.

All of these except the old iPhone models I could see being switched over to USB-C or discontinued very quickly. Like, within a few months possibly (though maybe not likely).
Here’s hoping they don’t discontinue the AirPods 2, as these are the only ones I can wear comfortably, and that can be operated by tapping when wearing gloves and/or winter headwear.

What happens when the EU reg goes into effect? Do they have to stop selling iPhone 14s and put existing stock in a landfill?

What a mess: Apple's flagship headphones are incompatible with Apple's flagship iPhone.
And why did they ever come up with the idea to add lightning to the keyboard and mouse. Made no sense back then, and it definitely makes no sense today.
AirPods Max don’t work with the iPhone 15 series?? That’s crazy!!

Lightning connection lives on! I still have a 4th gen iPod touch at home, the 30-pin connector hasn't broken yet. :D

No, they sell any remaining "existing stock" to billions of people in the rest of the world. The EU is just one region on a much more crowded planet. Far more iPhone buyers don't live there than do.

All this spin about e-Waste seems towards entirely misplaced. Those with Lightning stuff (like me) will keep on using Lightning stuff & cables. When that stuff finally conks, perhaps the "we care about the environment," richest company in the world should expand their recycling program to also turn lightning future "waste" into USB-C equivalents? Wash the costs of such a program by charging a nominal fee. Recycle the copper, etc involved and use it towards making USB-C accessories & cables "made from 100% recycled materials." Great PR, happy customers, "save the world", improve goodwill, good press, etc.

Of course, that wouldn't be as profitable as junking Lightning stuff at end of life and selling replacements at full price (and margin), but Apple could easily execute such a plan and put as little as no money where their PR mouth is on this topic. The sacrifice to them would be the opportunity loss of profit on the replacement stuff without offering any recycling credit. They would still make full profit on all new sales of the same accessories to those without anything Lightning to "trade in."

But let's just keep blaming "not Apple" players for "forcing" all this Lightning waste into landfills as if it is the only possible option and Apple has no choice. "Think different."

I actually like EarPods, they fall apart very quickly but the sound has been very consistent over the years and the microphone is great. At least they're available with USB-C now and in some point of the future, I can use the same on the Phone and the Macbook (it's compatible as per Apple website).
