 and

: I automatically think you're a child who doesn't know how to control their anger.

: Makes me think you're an immature brat.

I think there is a difference in being mad and having unchecked, or uncontrolled anger.

Rolling eyes is just a way to communicate sarcasm to help drive a point of written communication so people know how to read, or interpret, what you wrote and, hopefully, understand your meaning and intent.

So, I must disagree with your assessment of these emoticons.

I completely agree with everything stated in this brilliant post.

The people who use those stupid smilies to try to make clear their intent are silly folks.

"Immature brat"...that's a good one, and so on the mark!

And the observation that users of the "mad" smilie need anger management...brilliant.

I'm incredibly impressed with the deep reasoning and incredible importance of these observations. My sincerest thanks for this thought provoking post.

Thanks SandboxGeneral for the being the only person in this thread who shows his disagreement with my post by being civilized and mature. Seriously. :)

I agree on the purpose of the emotion. But personally I kind of hate when people point out what they said was sarcasm. In real life you wouldn't do that. I know this is text and it's hard to give off the nuances of sarcasm, but I always say for sarcasm on the internet, go hyperbolically sarcastic. Make it so obviously sarcastic that you don't need to put a "/s" on the end. Take for example "Shrink's" post below you:

Words like "thought provoking" and "brilliant" along with sentences such as "I completely agree with everything stated in this brilliant post" make it so obviously sarcastic, partly because he's being incredibly hyperbolic.

Yeah, no one would ever indicate sarcasm with the tone of their voice or expression on their face.

""

Of course they would. But they wouldn't say "Hey everybody! This is sarcasm! Look at me being sarcastic!" Because if you have to point it out, you aren't doing it right.

By the way, I used quotes with the sarcastic emoticon because I was referencing it.

I get it, none of you agree with me and you want to all keep posting "" as if you were original.

You're so certain of our motives.

Possibly a message there?:) (<-----An approved emoticon, I hope)

How do you show emetion in text, do we have to spell it out. I am happy, sad, you know that last post, that was sarcasm if you didn't know. So without the emoticons explain how we do it?

:p;):D:) are all really good emoticons. I mean, look how nice they look.

I disagree. Now  on the other hand I could never find a use for.

Furthermore, its text shortcut lies.

You forget you are on the internet, someplace where
1. Verbal and non-verbal cues are completely eliminated, making it very hard to tell a sarcastic post
2. If you think people can't misinterpret something, they will. It's the internet.

I've seen people rage over Shrink's post because most of the time, they are very well written and can be interpreted in an opposite, albeit hyperbolic, manner.
The  symbol means sarcasm, and at least gives a hint to most people who would otherwise take Shrink's posts seriously. Before I was around here enough to know that he's a pretty funny guy, I thought some of his posts were written in seriousness. There were a couple times I thought he was absolutely crazy :eek:

We should get this as an emoticon, its from another forum I visit.

And I just want to say, I'm not sure I can count the times that this emoticon would have been great for a response for something. I mean, seriously, sometimes people should know that they got a good chuckle out of you.

Thanks for the kind words. And as for the highlighted line...you were right the first time!:p

Only a couple times? :D

Shrink uses it often, usually when he puts his foot in his mouth. ;)

Very cruel!

Absolutely true...but the truth hurts.:(

Are you trying to show everybody how cool you are ?

You seem to be yelling HEY ! look how cool I am !!

Are you overly happy ?

:)

You seem to be showing everybody HEY ! look how happy I am.

Hopefully you understand the meanings.
