I fail to see how these terms are even remotely compliant with the DMA… Apple still has all the control to approve or deny apps from the platform, and they’re now charging developers of free apps distributed within or outside of the App Store an absolutely insane fee if they want literally any of the new APIs…

A free app like VLC would end up paying Apple millions for even using a single new API…
Because if your aware of the act they are allowed as the see reasonable and fit to provide security measures and verification process to maintain platform security which is what they’re doing.

The Swiss Parliament weighted on the issue here.

Basically they expect Apple to implement the EU rules in Switzerland too and if not they would consider legislative intervention.

Thanks for the link. Let‘s see what happens.

So I am curious to see what happens if you use two Apple ID’s for the store. What will determine the access to the alternative app stores. I have a Dutch(NL) one and a Turkish one. Now I can just login using one or the other and see the and download the specific apps with the corresponding prices (Turkish quite often much cheaper).

I gotta say, I love all the comments about “thanks it’s only there and not on my country” as if suddenly this is gonna be a reign of chaos where you need 20 marketplaces, unlike Android where that’s a possibility since always and all popular apps are on the play store and then the niche ones can be found elsewhere

2-3 years? You think the EU moves that fast? 🤣

DMA was relatively fast. Everyone now agrees with DMA and none of the gatekeeper companies are EU-based. So any future decisions will be easy.

I'm so happy Norway isn't included! I thought we would be included because of the EEC-agreement.

Fortunately the might of the Kingdom of Norway, the Republic of Iceland and the Principality of Liechtenstein saved us once again.

Med en ny lov om digitale markeder, Digital Markets Act, vil EU begrense selskapenes dominans. Loven trer i kraft i EU våren 2023, og vil bli norsk lov.

The amount of pearl clutching around this is kinda hilarious, some people have bought into Apple's PR line really hard. All this does is move iOS towards (and not even all the way) being as open as macOS, Windows, Linux etc. It's great news for users and developers, everyone outside the EU should be demanding it too otherwise before long the capability of their devices will be falling behind. Anyone really concerned about security can stay in the walled garden if they wish. Getting mad about it makes no sense whatsoever.

This is simply the timeline from the Commission making the proposal and it passing through the various stages to become active. So that's essentially 3.5 years to pass the act. The Commission had already spent several years prior to 2020 evaluating the market and coming up with the proposal they presented. The DMA is one of several pieces of legislation to come out a review that kicked off in 2014!

Actually in many countries the number of continents is taught as five in school. That goes in line with the number of Olympic rings, which each represent one continent. There is not worldwide agreed definition of continents. If you define them by connected land mass, Europe and Asia should be a single continent. Some even call it "Eurasia". However if you define them be tectonic plates, there would be a lot more continents and some parts of California would not belong to America for example.

This year Japan will follow the EU and also require third party app stores. I am pretty sure many more countries will follow, because their citizens want the same rights as EU citizens.

That is a complete and utter lie and everyone knows it.
Lets be honest on the real reason. It means less money for Apple.
Just admit the truth Apple the real reason is about greed. I will call you greedy for it but I can at least respect you being honest. Right now it is just Apple being greedy and a complete liar.

It's very clearly both.

RE Brexit chat, this will 100% happen in the UK too before long as otherwise UK users and developers will be disadvantaged against their EU counterparts. It'll be yet another great example of the Brexit fallacy, whereby we'll always follow the EU in most things as they're by far our biggest market and always will be. Except now we've left we have zero influence over EU policy, and so we're essentially rule takers with none of the benefits. Genius.

I asked for it. I’d rather own my phone thanks.
buy an android phone then!

This is just ridiculous the whole thing. Dont people understand what they are buying??

If you dont like what Apple supplies, there ARE alternatives.

People are behaving as if Apple are an evil monopoly - how can this be the case when there are alternatives.....

More likely something I will never use but we should have the option if we choose to use it

Determinist nonsense. There are other reasons to choose one platform over the other. It is choosing between two imperfect platforms.

Apple is not an evil monopoly, Apple holds too much market power. Some commenters have tasted a little too much of Tim's back-end.

It won't affect you if you don't want it to. You'll be able to continue using the Apple app store exactly the same as today if that's what you want to do. It's going to be ok, I promise.
