is there a chance that location services behavior has changed with 2.1, in the sense that it DOES go to sleep when it is not being used?

it seems that if i keep it on, and then close whatever application is using it... then later return... it begins with a small crosshair and then relocks a gps signal... (but i think that is the way it's always been)

either way, i agree with the original poster. it is a bandaid fix, i believe gps should sleep automatically after a given time. you shouldn't have to open the hood of the iphone after every app that uses location services in order for the phone's battery to last more then a few hours a day...

imagine the equivilent wifi behavior on a laptop (if wifi were a powersuck)... if every time you used the internet you had to go to system preferences, turn off wifi, close system preferences... and then the reverse when you wanted to access wifi.... in order to not have your laptop run out of juice in thirty minutes....!

I'm afraid that the GPS chip does not function the same way with 2.1. I cancelled my data plan long ago, but I had almost always been able to have my location pinpointed before 2.1, whether I was on a distant stretch of highway or in my room. Now, I see that my location "could not be determined." If I am using a Wi-Fi network, I can see generally where I am, but that is the most I have been able to get out of 2.1's GPS.

I actually leave location services on all the time and don't notice any significant battery drain unless I've got Google Map open.

Same.

And my GPS is very accurate, just as before.

If we knew that locatin services didn't drain battery life when not being used but still on in the preferences it wouldn't be a problem. As it stands it's still ambiguous.
