I like Things, I really don't need it to be anything other than it already is.

My gripe, which I guess is other Things users' gripe, is the payment model. I'm very happy it's not subscription based ( there's already more then enough subscriptions ), but that not only do you pay twice to run Things on an iPhone and a Mac ( and the whole point of things is how it runs across your devices), but that you have to pay THREE times for it on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Please just make iPhone and iPad versions a single purchase. I'd be far more likely to recommend it to other users if didn't feel like gouging.

While I’ve always admired the design of Things, lack of sharing and some basic integrations make it a nonstarter for me anymore. I get more mileage from Reminders nowadays.

Love Things, have it on all my devices. No subscription is customer friendly.

But agree, they can improve it, even though it’s already great - looking forward an even better Things.

Great app. No subscription BS. Bought for macOS and iOS. Sync works flawlessly.

I use it to add/remove items from an inventory (travel/work luggage). Every item I have, It's in a list. If I move such item to another place, I just hold and move the item to another section. So I know exactly where things are. No other app comes close and I can't find any that easily can move one item to another section.

You're buying (not renting) separate pieces of software, each of which is carefully optimized for its platform. There are so many developers who just crap out a reskinned version of their iOS app and then offer it "free" on the Mac. Apple does this themselves more and more these days.

As for "gouging", Things 3 for Mac came out in 2017 and has been updated and optimized frequently since then. They've even built and maintained, for free, a bespoke sync service that's more reliable and faster than iCloud. If supporting purchased software and a cloud service for the better part of a decade is gouging, then I guess you and I have different ideas about that. You can't be happy software is not a subscription and also complain about having to pay a fair price for it.

What I would consider gouging is renting out a "universal" (i.e. lowest common denominator) app for $40/year or whatever -- which would add up to over $300 since 2017, and leave you empty-handed the minute you stopped paying.

Now that iPadOS 26 can run iPhone-only apps in sensible-sized windows, using the phone app there is an (IMO) reasonable compromise for light use on iPad, also. Not that I'm saying you shouldn't buy it for iPad if you want the full power/interface.

I bought it on Mac and iPhone because that's where having was most important to me (and the cost for all three isn't trivial, as people have said - though the two I have so far are very worth it!) and I figured I'd wait and see if I missed it on the iPad. I did install the iPhone version there at some point when my phone was getting fixed or something but only used it once or twice when I really had to.

Anyway long story short, since the iPad OS beta, I've found it totally usable and pleasant. (Yes, the phone keyboard is silly when you don't have an external keyboard connected, and you don't get the desktop sidebar experience, etc., so it's not as powerful, but for quick reference and/or the widget, IMO is worth a try)

I guess you could do the same with the iPhone app on your mac now, too - I never thought of that (and was still on an Intel mac when I bought it, so wasn't possible/relevant) - but I think you lose out on a lot more there.

This thread just reminded me that one time I drove about an hour to CompUSA to buy a piece of software in a box that was I think called SoundScrubber and seems like it was around $100. not even counting the times I would pay $129 for each OS.

One day we will gather the youngins ’round the fire and tell them how easy they have it. “Update week for y’all was charge your devices and updated everything on the same day for free… we drove an hour away to buy a box with cds in it."
