Cultured Code's popular task management app, Things, is now free for a limited time. The productivity app is being discounted as part of Apple's week-long "Free App of the Week" promotion and is the first time the app has ever been offered for free.

The sale extends to both the iPhone and iPad version of the app, offering a combined savings of $30 on the two iOS apps. Things for iOS normally is priced at $9.99 for the iPhone version and $19.99 for the iPad version. To celebrate this promotion, Cultured Code also is lowering its price on Things for the Mac ($34.99), taking 30 percent off the full $49.99 price of the app.

Things for the iPhone [Direct Link] and iPad [Direct Link] are available now for free in the iOS App Store and will remain on sale through November 28. The sale on the Mac version [Direct Link] is also live with the discount available for the upcoming week.

I've been using things for about four years now. One of my favorite apps. In this last year, they are updating it a lot which is great. It was still for a while, so I'm really glad it's getting recognition

Normally between $10 and $50. How do they justify those prices for something so trivial? Out of the box I can do the same things in Calendar and Notes on my iPhone.

Things is App of the Week? Apple please.

Cultured Code is the laziest bunch of developers I've ever seen. It took them 2 years to update their damn app for iOS 7 / 8. Refused to provide ETA for anything upcoming and asked people to "use whatever suits them" when they complained about having paid premium cash for their suit (in other words: "F.O. and don't bother us.") Their apps are half baked at best and made only with compromises. A to-do app that doesn't even have time based reminders! LMFAO, no, thank you.

I used Things for a long time before shifting to OmniFocus. Although OF was somewhat complicated to begin with, I never had to look back again.

It does a lot more, otherwise nobody would buy it using your logic. I think pretty much everybody that's used it, would say it was worth the money

Nice to have such a relatively pricey app for free this week. I prefer OmniFocus but this is much simpler and easier to recommend for 'normals' ;)

Question... I don't have any need for Things right now as I'm fairly happy with Reminders. If I download the app today for free and then delete it, will I be able to download it for free later down the road?

Dang, that was expensive before, $10 for phone, $20 for iPad and $50 for desktop.
(still will cost $35 for desktop)

Is it really that good?

Yes

Yes, you will.

Does this mean it IS free if I download it today and will remain free OR does this mean that i am getting a free trial for so many days but if i decide to keep it after that period, it will cost me a certain amount of money?

You are getting the full app for free. When they change the price back to the regular price, you are considered to have purchased it, so like any other app you have already purchased, you don't have to pay a second time.

This is true, even though it may not show up as Purchased. I got Notability as a free app of the week a while ago. It doesn't show up in my list of Purchased apps, and it shows the price instead of Free/Get; but when I download it, sure enough I get the message that "This version is free etc.".

This is a good strategy for Culture Code. I got Notability for free, as I just mentioned, and was so impressed that I ended up buying the Mac version. I will probably pay for future upgrades, now that I'm a heavy Notability user. So they give the iOS version for free to some people who may then buy the Mac version.

Also, there is a new version of Things on the horizon, which will be a paid upgrade for everyone. So they get some new users, just before they retire this version and launch Things 3. Smart move. ;)

You should think about getting into this business seeing as you're a developer. ;)

It would be easy enough to make a system for just doing this stuff in Calendar and Reminders. But in reality, it would be like having to use multiple calendars and notebooks.

It doesn't make sense to organize everything to have due dates either, sometimes it's just noting the process you have to follow.

Saying that, I prefer Firetask.

I started with Things years ago and dropped it quickly for Wunderlist which is free for both the desktop and iOS devices. I love it and think it is much better supported by the developers.

as usual i'm just downloading it because its free... and then deleting it.

wow this one was really expensive.. i'm surprised people buy it

I was just going to say I use Wunderlist and can't see why anyone would pay so much for Things?! Wunderlist is free and works really well on iOS and Mac. With clients (that I haven't used) for Android, Chromebooks and Windows. There's even a decent web app that I use in a pinch.

Am I missing something with Things? Just doesn't make sense at the usual price point.

Things 3 is coming, and it's going to be a new app, and you'll have to pay again. Pretty sure now.

All of these task management apps are a non-starter for me if I can't access them from my PC at work. I can with Notes and Reminders.

Case closed.

Wunderlist is a flaming piece of crap.

I've seen double notifications. Reminder notifications for things I've already marked complete. No reminder notification when one was clearly set. Shared list items just disappearing into thin air.

And then they prompt you continually to rate their app even if you've already rated it.

Yeah Cultured Code team is a part of the elitist group of developers who have repeatedly, over the time, been highly reluctant to develop apps off the Apple ecosystem, it also includes Rapidweaver and the highly beloved Panic.
