Nov. 9.
Go buy iPhone.
Activate on iTunes, take out contract with o2.
Wait two days, cancel contract as you're within your 14 day returns policy.
Keep activated iPhone.
Pop o2 Pay as you Go sim card in and hey presto, iPhone with no insane contract.

Think it could work?

from what i read, u cant

u have to use sim that has been activated with an iphone

in which case, u cant use PAUG sims at all

Basic n00b question similar to the OP's...

Could you buy 02 iPhone, not activate it - do a fake activation and unlock for any network SIm??

Well I'm getting one regardless on Nov. 9. So I'll be taking out a contract, no harm in trying my o2 Pay/Go SIM to see if it works, if not, no harm, if it does - Saturday morning contract cancelling.

Let me get this right??

When you buy an iPhone in the UK you only buy the boxed up phone?? From CPW, Apple or o2??? You don't actually sign up for any contract until you get home and activate through iTunes (including credit assessments/checking)??

This is definitely the way that it will work.

thats the way it works in the US... And it work pretty well...

Did no-one read anything when the iPhone came out in the US? You can't just use a PAYG sim, after you've activated, the SIM Card has to be activated to be used on an O2 contract, if you wanted to use an O2 PAYG card, you will still have to unlock the phone.
