I've never owned an Apple watch i currently have a Fitbit Versa from day one which is now on it's last legs, but not sure which one to go for.
Do i save some money and go for the Series 3 or splash the cash on a Series 5 or hang on for a few more months & go for the Series 6?

The Series 3 is tempting because of the price which is much much better than my Versa only problem i have is future support, how many more years will it get before Apple decides to drop it?.

The Series 5 costs alot more but with a good few years of support left, but it's more likely going be replaced in just 4 months time.

The Series 6 may cost around the same price as the Series 5 on release, offer few more features & better battery life due to better efficiency from the new soc.

Which one do you think i should go for & why?

If you can wait, I’d say wait for series 6 for guaranteed new features and longer support. If you can’t wait, series 3 is a nice stopgap before buying a newer one down the road.

I guess future proofing is a valid consideration although I have a 3 and it does everything I want it to do today, but it's a few years old now.
I have a general principal with Apple hardware to buy the last model when the next one is released so what about the 4? It has all of the few missing features of the 3 and I assume would become even cheaper with the release of the 6.

My first AW was the Series 4 aluminum I bought 1 year ago. I just bought a Series 5 last week simply because I love the 4 so much, and I wanted it in a case material that the 4 did not offer.

Also, from reading all the rumours of what the Series 6 will include - I'm not tempted. I'd rather enjoy this whole summer with a device I already love and be done with it.

So, having never used a Series 3 - even though I've read so many good things about it (Still to this day) on this site - I'd go for the 5. There are so many sales on these days!

Good luck!

If this is your first Apple Watch, there’s so many features and capabilities to utilize, I think the Series 5 is the most mature device they have ever offered. We know the Series 6 is coming, but if you’re not willing to wait, you can’t go wrong with the Series 5. Keep in mind, no matter which Apple model watch you choose, they all perform the same functionality, you’re essentially choosing the metal casing With the aluminum, stainless, titanium, etc.

I would aim for a series 5 or 6 depending on how long you’d like to wait. The always on display is too nice to pass up.

Series 5 or 6. It will give you a newer or newest watch. Apple will support it for a few years but even when support eventually stops it will still work for you. Will give you several good years use. I went from the Series 0 to the Series 5. Still sold my Series 0 and made some money back.

I would wait for the new series 6 and then you can decide if it’s worth it for you or buy the series 5 cheaper than now

Major caveat with your post, By your suggestion of waiting, it’s Entirely possible Apple Could discontinue the Series 5 Apple Watch in their lineup with the release of the S6. [They’ve done this across their product line-up many times over], and if that is the case, then a Series 5 wouldn’t be available direct through Apple.

another suggestion, wait until about August, the Series 5 will probably be discounted even more (As it has in the past), once retailers are under the notion that the S6 is imminent with a release, it gives the OP time to determine if that’s the best possible route.

I would definitely wait for the Series 6. Also there is a chance that Apple will update the Series 3 internal and just call it the Apple Watch :)

The bigger screen does make a difference in terms Of the user experience and there are some exclusive watch faces for the 40/44mm.
