The series 2 watch are great buy now. As with many Apple's products, the subsequent refreshes after the 2nd gen is not usually as huge of a leap as from the 1st to 2nd.

The 7000 Series aluminum is very durable and not holds up well against damage. It's very lightweight. As for your outdoor activities, I would recommend Apple Care for the added protection.

However, your iPhone and Apple Watch must have matching software updates to function together. I can't speak for your jailbreak situation.
So if I buy a series 2 now my phone running iOS 8.1 won't work with it??

Thanks for the replies. I understand that features and purpose play a big part in the decision process of buying the Watch. I don't think the question is whether I like to wear a watch or not. In general, Watches have been around years, long before technology and I have woren watches before. I am looking at this more of a feature approach than wearing something on my wrist. Two of the features, Fitness and convenience. I am a very activity person so Fitness is important to me. Also, the conenience of having it on the wrist is easier than taking out your phone at certain time of the day. However, I would like, the Watch and phone to be independent of each other. I am sure I share that same wish and hope with others. Like most people, I spend money that suits my lifestyle and what is my purpose with it. If I am going to spend a lot of money on a Watch, I am going to spend it on the features and purpose of using it. With that said, I will probably wait on this one.

We don't even know if series 3 will be released this fall. It is a possibility, but they could announce it later and you'd have to wait about 6 months even in the best case scenario.
Series 1 would be a perfect fit for you, it the cheaper model and I guess you can find some deals if you don't buy it directly from Apple
Is the Apple Watch only compatible with the absolute latest version of iOS or will it work with 10.2? How does that work, do you literally have to keep updating it every release or it stops working??

No it doesn't stop working. Last week I updated my iPhone to the latest 10.3 but waited a couple of day before updating the Watch and it run smoothly. But I guess you have to update the iPhone in order to update to the latest version of Watch

What I'm asking is if I have a phone that has iOS 10.2 bc I want to Jailbreak it, will it work with the watch regardless of what software is on it?

I would suggest visiting to jailbreak Community on the website and see what they have to say. I have no experience with jailbreaks and I'm not sure how it would affect the Apple Watch.

I respect this decision. You have to really have an appreciation for wearable technology and what it can offer to you. And in your case, it's not for you at this point.

My question has nothing to do with Jailbreaking though, I'm asking if 10.2 will be compatible with any watch or only certain watch software?

Actually, you did mention jailbreaking in post # 28, you mentioned you want to jailbreak it to 10.2, which is why I referred to this.

At minimum, you need iOS 10 regardless. Whatever iOS version you upgrade to, your Apple Watch has to be compatible with that specific version order for the watch to communicate with the iPhone. There is no "Certain software", both versions of iOS/watchOS have to be congruent with each other. There is no other Way around this.

Gotcha, and how do I find out which version of the watch software is compatible w iOS 10.2?

Also, although I mentioned jailbreaking my question was specific to watch/iOS compatibility. I see what you're saying though.

My question for you is, why wouldn't you upgrade to 10.3? That's the latest iOS version available, which would give you access to the latest version of watchOS 3 .2. I'm not sure why you would want iOS 10.2.?

Bc he wants it on iOS 10.2 whenever a jailbreak releases for it

So, my question is for the OP, is it worth waiting on a purchase for something that may or may not happen due to an unreleased Jailbreak?

There already is a JB for 10.2, it just doesn't work with the 7. I'm debating whether I should get a 6S with iOS 10.2 or hold out for a 10.3 JB compatible w the 7. Is the 7 significantly faster than the 6S?

I see what you're saying. I'm not familiar with jailbreaking. I own the 6S plus and 7 Plus and I feel the 7 Plus is significantly faster over my 6S Plus.

Th, as someone who has been jail breaking since it first released, a jail broken 6s is way better than the 7.

But both phones stock, the 7 is better. My fav feature is the fake home button. I hated the home button on the iPhone 2g-6S

Ok, so I need to go find a 6S w 10.2. How much faster is it than the 6?

I was exactly where you are a little over a year ago - wondering it I should buy the original  Watch or wait for the rumored next gen that was coming. I didn't wait and I have not regretted it at all. I have been enjoying my  Watch since its purchase. Will probably, at some point, give this one to my wife and get a newest version, but so far I do not regret my decision at all.

Go for it!

It's actually not a fake button, it's a solid-state button that is derivitive off of the Haptic Engine that senses pressure. It's known as the haptic home button.
