1) When traveling internationally, can I "deactivate" Verizon roaming and just buy a data sim card? With the previous unlocked iPads, this is possible, but I haven't seen a confirmation of this for the Verizon iPad.

2) What international frequencies are available on the Verizon iPad? Presumably you can't use the HSPA+ GSM that is available in the US (even if you buy an AT&T sim card and put it in the Verizon iPad). What about similar frquencies abroad?

3) Do any of you have a Verizon LTE phone? How often is LTE unavailable?

I am seriously considering going to the Verizon store at 8 AM on Friday and returning the AT&T iPad when I take delivery...

I travel to Europe and Australia on a regular basis. The AT&T sim card can be swapped out easily for a card in whatever country I visit. For instance, last year in Sydney, I was able to purchase a card that allowed me to "load" Gigs when I had run out of my initial 2G allotment. I do not think you will be able to do this with Verizon. I have their iPhone, and have never been able to use it "locally" in other countries.

if you just need it for the US yes go for it you are right,
I bought the AT&T but going to use the WIFI only,
the GSM is not just AT&T any micro sim around the world will work so its a good selling point,
because next year I will buy the new iPad that will come out

The VZ version has the same MicroSim slot, as LTE uses a Sim.

Most definitely can with a VZ or Sprint 4S and the new VZ 4G Ipad. Ironically, it's AT&T that restricts their 4S from being using any other carrier sim overseas.

The iphone 4 VZ model did not have a Sim.

I have seen this question asked but not answered on these forums: is it true VZW charges activation fee to start or restart data plan?

I just heard back from my old Verizon rep...he said that there would be no activation fees because this is not a contractual plan or agreement. Prepaid or postpaid is irrelevant...no activation fee because no contract.

I called Verizon 3 times regarding activation fees if you want to purchase a data plan a few times a year. I got a different answer every time I called, but most of the reps said there would be an activation fee whenever restarting service. Then I realized that those reps usually only deal with postpaid, contract plans, and all of those plans do require activation fees, even for month-to-month service.

One of reps finally knew to transfer me to the prepaid department, which is the correct department for iPad data plans, and I was assured that there were no activation fees for stopping and restarting service a few months later.

GSM is built into the VZ version too, and will work worldwide on 3G GSM networks.

I did not know that the iPhone 4S had a sim. I have the original Verizon iphone, which has none. My Hubby has the 4S; does that mean he cannot swap out the sim for a local carrier when we travel overseas, the way I did with my AT&T iPad?

I went with VZW for a few reasons. I have an AT&T iPhone now.

1) VZW has a wider 4g coverage area and it will likely only get bigger and bigger. I get what people are saying about dropping back down to HSPA and GSM on AT&T, but 4g should only get better and better, not worse and worse. My coverage area is saturated with VZW LTE.

2) I remember waiting forever for AT&T to get decent 3G coverage. It took YEARS. I dropped calls constantly, data was spotty, etc. VZW always seems to go with reliability more than speed. When I need to get online, I prefer reliability over speed.

3) I've seen the tests that show AT&T smoking VZW on 4G. However, VZW has had phones available for 4G for a while now and already has widespread coverage. AT&T has recently released 4G and only has a few phones on that network. Of course, that would mean their coverage isn't as saturated as VZWs. Once the new iPhones come out with 4G and more phones are available on AT&T, I think the results will be negligible.

I like AT&T - I just don't feel like waiting years for them to get up to speed on 4G like they were with 3G. Either way, I don't think anyone will be upset with AT&T or VZW's 4G. We'll still have the awesomest tablet out there!

I bought both att and then Verizon. Was late to return ATT back. Going to keep Verizon.
1. I have iphone 4s ATT. When LTE iphone5 LTE be available I switch to VZW.
I want to try VZW for now.
2. For now I'll have "potfolio diversity" ATT iphone VZ IPAD.
3. Hotspot
4. Verizon LTE is 2 miles closer to my village than ATT. (I live on the border of both LTEs)
5.Verizon has more LTE coverage.
6. VZW has more LTE spectrum for now
7. With VZ IPAD I can use ATT SIM. If I want :)
8, I switched from Comcast to FIOS and I happy now, UPS!!! It a different story.
For ATT:
ATT can be resold to Canada easier, since it can use LTE there. Not a big deal. ATT has 1 GB more, I only read news, e-mails, browse... 1+GB/month.

Also I don't want to pay part(a very small part) of 4B dollars ATT-T-Mo bill. For 4B$ ATT could give a free month for all their customers and support our economy, no Greece exconomy thru German bailout :)

Verizon is definitely the best for the iPad, as you can use mobile hotspot. Really though, most of the time, tethering from your phone should be fine.

Oh, and AT&T in NYC... HAHAHAHA. I like AT&T, but their network in NYC...

I contacted Verizon directly and, although it took a few days, did receive an answer. It doesn’t look good:

“Yes, there is an activation fee for all new lines of service. In your case, the activation fee would be $35. This applies each time that a line activation is requested.”

I read this as $35 to start and another $35 each time you turn if off and then back on. Unfortunate since I really needed the Verizon service at a location I frequent every few months. Looks like it will be an AT&T iPad for me.

People, Apple will not allow this to happen or so I think. Apple would look stupid by making a deal, and then not being able to fulfill their end of the bargain. It is not the way Apple does business and not the way Apple treats their customers.

Also, as others have stated, one is not obligated by a contract such with our cell phone plans. Although, I suppose anything can happen and if Verizon attempts to charge for an activation fee, I'll return my iPad faster than rabbits do you know what! Just my 0.02

More misinformation. For the last time this does not apply to prepaid accounts. How many times does it have to be said before people will believe there is no activation fee on the iPad.

Where did you get confirmation that an AT&T sim works

Apple rep told me that VZ SIM slot should be unlocked. May be You are right and it is internationally unlocked only. For sure it will work in Europe and Canada.
Also I read here: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/0...erizon-4g-ipad-to-use-with-atts-hspa-service/

I dont like this 35 dollars activate/disactivate fee. How much is ATT activation?

I'm not a very poor guy, but I don't like to waste money for nothing.

I hate this "no info" situation, that's why I bought 2 iPads. One is going back. They loose only due to the lack of info provided. I saw a lot of guys are doing the same.
Apple reports that they sell millions first week, and who cares that they get back thousands and loose on FedEX labels. I also ordered/preordered 5 cases, since it is going to be shortage. I need only one!!!!

----------

Can I have 20/1 VZW plan if I never had iPads before?
Should I pay 35 dollars fee to activate one with VZW?
Should I pay anything with ATT?

The closer the Friday I want iPad less and less :)

The $35 is not true. It doesn't apply on prepaid devices.

If you look at various carriers globally, it's pretty clear that Apple is setting terms about how activating the 3G/4G on these things works, as pretty much every carrier worldwide offers plans that are similarly priced, and work in a similar way. A lot of times they are better than anything else on the network.

No activation fee from Verizon website

Contractual 1 & 2 year plans require activation fees.
