I like AMD over intel but for music and video work Pentium chips are better to use. For compression and stuff like that Raw clock speed is about all that matters and in test after test intels chips are faster than AMD chips for that stuff.

That's what I was gunning for too, but I simply don't know enough about PCs to know who is a reputable (cheap) manufacturer. Alienware looks purdy, but can get pretty expensive, pretty quickly.
