I'm thinking about getting an iMac. I might wait untill the end of the month to see if there are any news on the 2011 update. Either way, going from a SSD to HDD would be a massive downgrade & I don't need a 256GB SSD for £450 when I can get a 120GB for £170 (which is more then enough). Is there space for a SSD & a HDD in the 21.5" iMac or would I have to get the 27"? Does the iMac come with the OSX CD/DVD so that I can install it on the ssd & use the hdd provided for storage? Will opening the iMac void my warranty?

Next update should bring Thunderbolt which allows you to have fast external storage, e.g. external SSD as a boot drive. I would definitely wait for that if you're thinking about an SSD.

I would get a Mac mini 2,66 with 8 GB of ram ( buy ram from an external source, because Apple charges ridiculous prices for 8Gb ) and an awesome 3rd party monitor that is much better than the one build in iMac.

You will be around the same price as a normal iMac, but with a lot of ram and and a much better screen.

Just wait for it. Try to avoid the forums; it won't help with the waiting.

I've seen that - looking at previous release dates, it hasn't always been the 7 months everyone is talking about. Some releases are 11 months apart........

Even if it is 11 months worst case, it was last updated in July so that would mean June which is only 3 months from now. It may even be sooner, so I'd wait.

I'd strongly recommend against that. You would get half the processor, and the screen on the iMac is one of the nicest on the market (IPS, 2560x1440), unless you really hate the glossy that much.

ram is not everything....

I 100% agree with you here... I don't really mind glossy displays

NEC LCD3090.

I'm not supporting the idea of buying a mini, but there are better monitors than the one on the iMac.

That may be a very fine monitor, but it already costs more then the actual 27" iMac (at least where I live). For a macmini+display to be cheaper then the iMac (as suggested by someone earlier in the thread), the display must be 1000€ or below. I just don't see a something like that on the market.

EDIT: I stand corrected, I did not know that U2711 can now be had for 650€ :)

What about the Dell IPS 23" panels that you can buy for about $300?? Are the quality of those far lower than the iMac panel?

I was hoping to get the new mini - really depends on whether or not it receives the guts of the MPB. If it does, it'll be plenty powerful enough for everything I need. But if it doesn't, I'll be faced with yet another decision on whether or not to build my own sandy bridge win7 system or to buy an iMac :(

I've got a 23" TN panel now and I REALLY need an IPS (had some print projects really show that I need to update lol). So I was either going to get an iMac, or buy the new mini + a new Dell IPS panel for dual 23" screens, or get the new MBP and use that as my "print test" monitor :)

But if the Dell ones are not that good, it could kill my plan.

To be honest, you can only find maybe 3 or 4 27" or larger screens currently on the Market, which is better than the Apple Cinema Display 27". The Dell U2711 has the same LG panel as the ACD 27", so only Eizo, Nec and maybe HP have a better display and they all cost 1,5-2 times the price of the already expensive ACD 27" - mind you, I'm not an Apple fanboy, I'm just being honest here !
