I use a 16e now - it's "excitement level" is about the same as the two flagships I've used (13 and 8 Plus), which is ok by me. Going to a flagship device wouldn't be the cure for Eyefoan fatigue - so I understand if you went to Android. For me, however, I'm going to stay with Apple - which may not be exciting, but sure as heck works!
If the Iphone Ultra comes out this year and it is able to be leased at a reasonable rate, I could very well end up getting that instead of switching to an Android Phone.

Would be nice to own something that that has literally never existed before.

If I return to iPhone, will be probably with an e series. It would be awesome to see a 90hz screen at least..

Maybe at the end of the year I will give my Pixel to my GF and get an iPhone but still not sure. The Pixel is working amazing

For me the only thing that holds me back is the concerns I have about RCS messaging and group chats between android and iphone users. The rest of my family are all iphone users, so I would be the only android user in the group chats.

And no, I'm not interested in Whatsapp, Signal, etc, I would be using Google Messages in that case.
I'm the sole Android user among my circle of iPhone friends and family and no issues with RCS nor group chats.

I don't use WhatsApp either (nor Instagram, X, or TikTok for that matter). Google Messages is great and provides a web interface to access messages on my Macbook.

There isn't anything particularly special about iPhones so I ditched iOS years ago. I actually miss my Apple Watch more than my iPhone.

Apple eco system across its devices is very good & slick.
I have 17 just now (13pm) previously.
Hardware is great, software is the thorn in apples side for me. 13pm was way better than 17. Loads of annoying design choices (preventing me from just doing things I want to do sensibly). Your forced down apples way of logic which irritates the hell out of me.
If you use AI then I’d avoid Apple as Siri is useless. Current Siri makes android look good!

If you listen to music in car I’d avoid Apple as CarPlay only shows you 12 albums.
Music on iPhone, Apple rams subscription service at you, I only want to listen to my music that’s on my device, I have zero interest in a sub to Apple Music.
Apple fitness lacks full workout detailed review capability (like garmin connect).

I’ve not touched on my Mac as I barely use it nowadays.

If I didn’t have my Apple ultra 3 watch (which is really good btw) I’d be moving to another brand.

I’m tempted on galaxy flip but android hesitates me.

You need to be sure that you like Liquid Glass UI. I sold to my brother a 13 Mini and moved to Android because Liquid Glass.

If you can go to an Apple Store and test it, it would be the best
I really like Liquid Glass but if you don’t you can tone it down now. Android on the other hand is eye cancer inducing…

I'm the opposite -- I said "Ho-Hum" to my boring Apple Watch but still use my iPhone 16e. I replaced the watch with a Fitbit Versa 4 and am much happier. The Apple Watch was a great smartwatch, but a poor fitness tracker - the Fitbit sucks as a smartwatch, but excels as a fitness device.

Interesting you write this. I have a 17 Pro for my personal, and a 16e as my company issued device. Aside from the non-laminated screen which feels like it's a metre back from the glass, i love the 16e. It's small and light and the matte white is a lovely finish. I love the cameras on my Pro, but I definitely talked myself into a sale before Apple had to. I feel the days of huge thrills on the launch of new devices are gone, but also I'm not 20 any more, so maybe that has something to do with it too!

I think the 16e has a laminated screen, no? Maybe the SE iPhones didn’t?

Ive not used an iphone since the 5c. I usually am pretty Samsung loyal, but during their last keynote, the latest "innovation" they had was higher prices and said "AI" so many times that if you took a shot everytime you would have blacked out during the show within the first 5 minutes.

Ive been seriously thinking of making the switch back to an iphone. I have tradionally been a "flagship" sort of guy, but if im being honest, phones have gotten pretty boring in the last 2-3 years to me. So ive been eyeing a 17e.

I guess my question is, for those of you who have the 17e or 16e, how is it? Ive tried to look up youtube reviews, but like every youtuber, unless its a flagship, they generally trash every product.

My other question is, how is ios these days? Any former switchers have anything tips on things/annoyances to look out for or that I will to adjust and get used to?

Thanks in advance.

Came from Samsung S25U (512GB).

Small learning curve, but iOS is a long way better than the 3GS. On my 17Pro Max (1TB), it's very fast and snappy and re-learning iOS from a custom Android launcher wasn't hard to learn, but it took a little while to find out where everything was - inevitable.

The iOS v27 beta is noticeable better with battery life (and IMHO it was phenomenal before with the OG iOS v26). Did I mention yet that downloads occur behind the scenes? 3GS never did that from what I recall, and was my third-favorite surprise when switching.

There's no universal back button, but most apps have a button - or just swipe your hand across the screen and *bloop* it closes.

I adore Liquid Glass. iOS 27 makes a few changes but, with the right background, it looks a lot more nuanced. Still miss a couple things, but with the slider to control opacity and other Liquid Glass features, it should keep most people in the happy zone.

Still getting used to bringing up open tasks by swiping from the lower-left corner, but that's a mild nitpick.

In using HandyPhoto image editor, the S25U is noticeably faster in saving PNG files, but is hardly a dealbreaker.

Various phone features for phone calls and other useless things a phone is meant for have other nifty nuances in iOS that did not exist in the S25, as you will discover. Very happy.

Integration with the Apple Watch and even syncing to a secondary phone blows me away with ease of use.

Finding iTunes with iTunes Match and iCloud storage (but downloaded to phone since phone plan isn't unlimited data) to be quite a blessing, especially as my PC's SSD snuffed it and am still working on which files got corrupted, but I have a backup but with iCloud there's no worries.

Screen isn't the same resolution as the S25U, it's a little lower, but looking at both simultaneously, maybe I hit the screen lottery as iPhone's looks crisper and sharper.

Only real gripes are the build-in keyboard (largely have gotten used to it), and the nighttime photography could keep the crosshairs used to show phone stability while photo is being taken to be shown constantly (not dim until exposure starts to show!)

Don't do it. It's easy to switch to Apple, but fiendishly difficult to leave once you're here.

I am a 16e user myself in the phone has been really a powerhouse for me. I would recommend getting the 17e which has a couple more features and is more future proof. My stepdad has the 17e and it is a good phone so I have experience with both. The 16e was discontinued so I think the 17e would be a good choice because you get 256 GB storage MagSafe and what a lot of people don’t talk about is that the phones can charge up to 27 Watts with a 30 Watt charger I have no problem with iOS 26. It does not bother me. It is no different than when I used iOS 18 as well.

Trust me, your "isn't particularly exciting" experience with the 17e is the same exact experience you would have if you had the 17 Pro.
This is interesting. I hear you but, for me, a smart phone is a tool not a source of amusement or excitement. There is value in having things work the same way over several generations of hardware and OS’s. But there is tension between these different ways of looking at phones. How many times do people complain that Apple isn’t changing a given OS enough? And how many times do just as many people complain about change for the sake of change?

Having said all of this, I run both an iPhone 17 Pro and a Google Pixel 10 Pro. Both are solid phones with solid cameras. And, frankly, both iOS and Android work fine - although you have to put more work into Android (and also your Google account) if you want to lock down your privacy settings to a tolerable level. I will say that I agree with those who write that Google’s Pixels are heavy compared to iPhones of roughly the same size.

To the OP: I’d try an iPhone 17e if you’re really interested. But keep your eye out for deal on the regular iPhone 17, which is a fabulous device (although MSRP is $200 more). The base iPhone may never be as good again. But the 17e will treat you just fine if that’s as much as you want to spend.

I mean, if you really want the 17e or 16e, they both seem relatively simple. Personally, I would get the 3rd Gen SE even though they discontinued those.

My dad upgraded to a 17e from his 6s recently and he's liking it. The only downside imo is the camera, but my dad doesn't really mind. He thinks it's good enough.

No comments on the iOS... I feel it is quite subjective. Some people hate it, but adjust to it. Some people hate it and continue to hate it. Some people love it, and nothing can really make them hate it.

There are definitely a whole lot more options now in Settings since 5c, so you just got to explore it yourself to see how you like it. It's a personal preference, so...
