I think I won't be happy with just the M1 MBA, even though I've used one for the last year. It's a great machine but once you've used 120 Hz Pro Motion with mini-LED XDR, it's very hard to un-see it going back to a lesser display.

Ultimately, it looks like I've got 3 options:
  1. Keep the 14" MBP. It has the configuration that I believe is closest to ideal for my needs and desires. CAD ~$3900.
  2. Exchange the MBP for a fully-loaded MBA (16GB/1TB), using that as my only device. CAD ~$2300 if buying from the Apple refurb store.
  3. Exchange the MBP for a base model MBA and a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro (256GB cellular). CAD ~$3900 if buying the MBA from he Apple refurb store.
I'm just torn between the 3.
Must be great to be Apple. This is how they extract your money and keep you in the rat race. If you're going to splurge, why not jump to the 16? It offers a much better viewing experience and significantly better battery life. It also has better thermals (will be much cooler and more quiet).

HHAHAHAH, bro, that is a crap load of money to spend for something you don't need. These devices are for Pros.
And what is a "pro"? It's someone who makes money from their work. So anyone who works with a computer in an office or at a desk? A receptionist? A salesperson? A lawyer? A system admin? A thousand other jobs that require the use of a computer? None of these necessarily need lots of computing power, but they are all "pros".

And a non-pro might be a science/engineering student, hobbyist videographer or 3-D artist, gamer...who all need lots computing power.

These machines are for anyone we (a) actually needs the power they offer because they can't perform their tasks effectively with less, and (b) any who just wants one and has the money to spend on it.

That's all.

I would say a "Pro" is someone who requires lots of computing and GPU power in order to earn money. OP prefaces to say he/she is a prosumer at best so I assume he/she is not a Pro or someone who will use these devices to earn money.

The term pro was just a naming convention change from the time of PPC. They used to be called PowerBook and PowerMac. When Intel models returned they renamed the models to be MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. It's not like they were meant for power users later pro's.

Its just a naming convention to symbolize that they are capable, not exclusive to a particular usage. But lately we gotten it into our heads that more pricy Apple computers are only meant for Pro's like your comment. They can be for anyone that wants one. ;)

For me the opposite, sold Air & 12.'9". 12.9 was a brick on the couch or to carry to work. I waited endless years for a better display on a macbook with a deep black, I love it love it love it. Loudspeakers are better than expected too. Fun to watch movies now in the dark in bed. Multitasking and file management is still no fun on IPADOS. But I have the 11" now too, to read pdfs, EBooks, news, surfing etc...

One also has to consider the fact that we only have 1 pair eyeballs and 1 pair hands. My neighbor bought $7000 worth of latest Apple tech. He was mainly using Ipad Pro 11 with magic keyboard, while MBP 16 was collecting dust.
Then he switched to MBP 16 and his ipad pro with magic keyboard was collecting dust.
When he felt bad for it, he accomodated iPad Pro next to his MBP 16 just to have it to play spotify.

Sales tax in Canada is really a lot! I am so spoiled by the 0% rate here… that being said, I use the M1 iPad Pro with cellular daily and is a main personal device at work, i.e. much more than any MacBook. But if I need to work from home, the MacBook Pro is essential. I think it depends on how much use you will have for the device if budget is a concern. The M1 Air is a very good choice actually.

As an architect who often marks up hundreds of pages of drawings a week, I would NEVER go back to marking up drawings without an Apple Pencil.
Well depends on how you’re marking up, as in what’s being marked up (signature, text, etc).

But someone stating it isn’t possible on macOS is purely false as it was there before iPadOS or iOS. Preferences in the tool preferred aside a feature is a feature if equal to what is available. How you use it is up to you and which canvas to use it on use whatever suits you better.

If you recall those spungie tipped stylus/input pens that’s the reason for such a large track pad (not just for gestures) ;) of course not nearly as accurate but more patience it’s doable.

^nobody said it’s impossible. I said it can’t be done “as well.”

I’d stand by that because I do it every second day. Marking up drawings in Preview is WAY more time consuming. And if you need to sketch over the existing drawing to show where the water proof membrane goes in comparison to what’s been drawn…that is a lot easier on the iPad with a pencil.

I'm with you here. I just canceled my Macbook Pro 14" with a total price tag of $2171.03 USD (including tax) and I purchased an APPLE-Refurbished Macbook air with the M1 Chip 8-Core GPU, 8-Core GPU, 16GB ram, and 512GB SSD for $1315.03 (including tax). That's a savings of about $856. I'm sure the air will be powerful enough for what I need to do. I also have an iPad Pro and an iMac. Honestly, I just bought it because I always want the latest and greatest, but when it comes to reality a Macbook air will work great for me!

Wise decision. The M1 Air will be plenty! Especially with those specs!

Are you me? LOL

I already have a MBA M1 (base) from earlier in the year, I was planning on trading it in for the MBP 14" (base) as over the years my eyes are telling me that they need the brighter display and promotion 120hz that they are enjoying on the new iPhone 13 Pro. ?

Having used the MBA this year, the display isn't as bright as I would like, and the iPad Pro 11" and iPhone 13 Pro have spoiled me. So guess what I have the MPB 14", and it's amazing. But as a "prosumer" such as yourself, I work in medicine and don't really need the horsepower of the 14" MPB. I really enjoy the XDR display. Now here's the fun part, I am also considering returning the MBP 14", keeping the MBA M1 for when I need to use MacOS or want to, and get the iPad Pro 12.9" to sit on my desk next to my work PC for that XDR goodness, which I think is even BRIGHTER than the MBP 14 under normal use (non-HDR) 600nits max.

Life is full of fun choices. Reading this, just makes me feel so fortunate that we are even able to contemplate these choices.

none design professionals may not understand what you are talking about - I do.

However TBH I still find the ipad screen a little too small for markups of A1 drawings. Love the speed of the M chip though ! My 12" ipad basically lives next to me on my desk - it never leaves and acts as my sketch / image / markup tool. I have been thinking recently of getting something bigger however and connecting direct to the computer [wacom or even a surface book studio] to make life easier.

what apps are you using to mark up? I use PDF Expert.

I love the new MBP. I have the higher-tier stock configuration 14” model in silver with the 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16 GB RAM, and 1 TB SDD. The performance is great, the screen is amazing, and the battery life isn’t noticeably worse than the M1 Air.

My problem right now is the eye-watering price of $3900 CAD after AppleCare and taxes. It’s a lot of money to pay for a laptop, even though it’s my primary device. I’m a a “prosumer” user at best, without any really heavy workflows. The most demanding tasks I do are little bit of VM work (using Windows apps on a daily basis) and video editing/transcoding occasionally (i.e. once a week).

My dilemma is that I’m realizing that I could get both a 12.9” iPad Pro M1 and a refurbished MacBook Air M1 for the same (or less) money. The iPad would be my primary consumption device for things like web browsing, watching video, social media, photos, light document work, and casual gaming (online poker). The MacBook Air would be a secondary device used only for tasks where the iPad would be limited: VMs and working with multiple (or complex) office documents.

I’m really on the fence about it. What does the rest of this community think?
Would it not have been better to have that realization BEFORE the buy?
Now another person has to wait for their new MBP and there will be resources wasted due to transport/return. Sorry, but I find that behavior not ok. People should think and research before they buy, not the other way around.

yes, there are supply issues. But, rest assured, there are plenty of units flying around the world.

Don't be daft. There's plenty of people who are in the market for refurbished stock.

Ultimately I exchanged the 14 and got the 16 with a family member’s educational discount. I’m happy now.

Wow! So you spent more money!

What made you go for the 16", the battery life?
Larger/more immersive screen. Why skimp out and not take the bigger screen when ProMotion is available? Better thermals (more quiet, cool to the touch, etc.). And definitely better battery life. The 14's battery is trash compared to the 16.

The screen. Ultimately, it felt like spending almost $4k on a 16" laptop was better value than on a 14". I also realized the reason I liked the iPad Pro was my ageing eyesight and the ability to hold the screen closer to my face. The 14" was a little bit lacking on that front. The larger screen of the 16" is great, especially scaled to 1440x900 (1496x967 with the notch).
