This page, open on both machines, is using 240MB on the intel and 580MB in the M1. WHY?
It's known that Macrumors forums is resource intensive in Safari, so I view it with another browser plus an ad blocker, though that doesn't explain the difference between intel and M1. Supposedly, there will be a webkit/safari fix at some point that will correct the Macrumors issues, but it hasn't been implemented yet as far as I know

Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies and sorry for being AWOL, I've been busy with work and everyone in my house getting Covid.

That’s awful. So sorry to hear about that, and hoping for a speedy recovery for you and your family.

About the “downgrade,” I would personally do a clean reinstall of Monterey before doing a downgrade. Back up all your important data to an external hard drive, wipe/reformat the drive completely and then reinstall the OS from scratch.

I do not recommend reimporting your “profile” via Time Machine to the new installation. It’s safer to create a new user account on the reinitialized system, and then manually copy your documents, photos and so on back over to the new account.

Be sure to follow the instructions explained in a previous MacRumors article shown below when doing this.

Before even doing this, however, I’d recommend running Apple Diagnostics to ensure that there isn’t an obvious fault with the hardware itself. The instructions for that are here:

If you do this and the computer still is not functioning according to your needs, then I would say it’s time to take it back. Best of luck!

That clean install guide is really helpful, thanks so much jchap.

Looking at those two screenshots I realised that one logical reason things are using more memory on the M1 compared to the intel is the retina display.

I'll let you all know who it goes.

For completion

I wiped and reinstalled the system, though stayed with Monterey as I'm currently away form home and don't have a spare drive to create a bootable installer. Didn't use migration assistant. Feels like a new computer (obviously).

After some days of normal usage, the problem though turns out to be 'Using Google apps in safari' and the solution turns out to be 'using Google apps in chrome instead'. Keeping Safari and as my browser and just using chrome for Google Drive/Docs actually works fine for me. I do wonder is more RAM would have fixed this issue though, or if there's a memory problem with Safari and Google apps that's more than just size. It doesn't give me great confidence in the M1 lasting 10 years though.

I would of course have loved to wait for the forthcoming M2 Air, but I'm only in the US until July and it doesn't seem like it's going to appear before that, so the M1 I got on pre-christmas discount was a good deal. If the M2 is released before I leave I'll consider a trade it.

Foolishly lost my (non-recoverable for reasons) Creative Cloud subscription in this process.

Have a great Tuesday everyone!
