I switched from Sprint last November to get the iPhone. I did not have the Instinct, but I heavily researched it and spoke to people who owned it. The iPhone runs circles around the Instinct. Did Sprint ever announce the winners of the Instinct App contest? I remember reading about Instinct users being pissed-off about this. I switched from Sprint because they really didn't have any good phone to offer.
Anyways, I have no problems with the iPhone's battery life. I can pretty much surf the web for a straight 5 hours without recharging + manually checking e-mail here and there. I don't have push or fetch on. I don't really have much experience with the talk time as I probably surf the net more often than talk on the phone. Then after work, I hook it up to the car charger for the 40 minute commute. I never really run into battery issues since I have a car charger.
However, if you are on Sprint, I would seriously wait until the Pre comes out. The iPhone is fantastic, but it is missing features that many cellphone users take for granted - even Instinct users. You would not want to hastily switch, only to see a very comparable (if not better) cellphone come out. I know its not out yet, but you have to be real and do your research.
