Be aware that if you get an iPhone, they are going to hit you for another 2 year commitment.

Not always. I have been a ATT customer since the Bell South Mobility days (1988) and I did not have to renew my contract when we bought two iPhones. It depends on how long you have been a customer and how well you can smooze the customer service reps. I did not have to extend contracts or pay any activation fees. But, I called first to be sure before I took the plunge on iPhone Day 1.

What is a FAN discount? How does one get it?

Well first you need to figure out if your employer/school is eligible of discounts with AT&T by going here and typing your work/school email address. That will be your FAN ;)

Combine the FAN discount with these codes and that should help you save some dough.

When using the FAN discounts, do they check for employment?

I'm actually a consultant, but my email qualifies for the FAN discounts. Do they contact the company when I do this?

Well, I know this is dredging up an old thread but thought I'd do "the rest of the story" (tips hat to the late Paul Harvey). I made my decision a couple of months ago. Was checking out the Sprint store and made an impulse buy. They had a "family data plan" that included unlimited texting, internet and evenings starting at 7pm (Verizon had a similar plan but theirs started at 9pm...too darn late for folks like me who start up at 0430. Verizon does have a pretty neat feature NOW, circle of friends that you can call free no matter the time or carrier. I've mentioned that to Sprint and if they had that when I was looking it might have swayed me....alas.). Anyway, Sprint had a deal going on for their Blackberry Curves....$50 each and their family data plan with 1400 min/month was exactly what I was paying with AT&T with NO internet and unlimited texting and messaging for ALL. The BB's are really nice with the full keyboard. The kids are loving them.....they can text to their heart's content and also set up the phones to suck in their "mail" and send pics also. The Sprint Nav program (free to us) is also kind of neat. I've also found that getting a sprint/blackberry email is pretty neat. Had some repairs done to a vehicle and gave them my sprint/bb email and they were able to keep in touch that way instead of calling....hey, no charges that way.
Anyway, I would have loved to get the iPhone and perhaps when the kids are off on their own the wife and I will get them. Right now everybody loves the BB and Sprint's service has actually been pretty good...no complaints. Cheers

One thing that is a bit annoying.....Mac compatibility. Yes, I do run Pocket Mac but it is a bit hit or miss. Why can't BB get on board with Mac's????? Or why can't Apple make nice with BB's???? Guess I'll just have to live with it. Cheers
