Who says bezels don’t matter.
Here’s a comparison of the 41mm to the 44mm.
While the display size in pixels are pretty close, the visual impact is apparent.

The bezels make all the difference.
It almost looks like a new watch and certainly much more refined and elegant.

True but only will be very apparent when using full screen images like the maps app in the picture you posted. I ordered a 45mm but I still feel this wasn’t the watch apple intended this year.
 
Nice comparison OP. Had similar feeling I recall when Series 4 was launching. Was tempted at the time to go with 40mm from the 42mm I previously had.

This looks very close though, especially the pixel resolution. The thing that really messes it up for me is the collection of bands that I have.

Perhaps. But regardless of full screen or not, I think the heaviness of that 3mm border is what makes all the difference.

It confines and frames the content inward making it feel smaller. When you have little or no bezel, the content expands to the edges.
