Exactly. Because that crap is useless to some people. I need an optical drive and a bunch of USB ports on my secondary, portable laptop like I need a hole in the head. Totally useless for me. I would never use these things.

The MBA missing 'functionality' for these complainers means simply that it isn't the laptop for them. For some people it has good functionality. It isn't perfect (I'd like built in EVDO for example). But a lot of this 'funtionality' that you many decry is useless if you already have something like a Mac Pro.

I still say that it depends on who you are and what you are looking for. Apple is making a niche notebook for a group of people that were looking for exactly that, a small notebook with only a necessary port and a plethora of wireless options. IMO they did a good job of filling the gap and serving that group.

But there are a lot of users that are mistaking the AirBook for the replacement to the 12" PowerBook and many users that have taken it (with glee) as such. Some are still holding out, and will be holding out for even longer. The 12" PB was what the Sony TZ and the TZ's replacement is competing (or was) against. It had the necessary ports, the optical drive, and a smaller screen.

If Apple does make a 12" PB replacement or an 11.1" MacBook Pro (I know... it won't happen...) then that book will be what people are after, the ultra small PRIMARY notebook with two USB ports, and optical, etc.

The AirBook is great for those that do have a powerful desktop sitting at their desk at home or at the office and want the perfect road warrior's laptop to take along with them, that they can essentially (given the amount of wireless) use anywhere at anytime.

I am more of a 12" PowerBook/Sony TZ kinda guy, but the AirBook is truly a nice piece of work.

It is thin, even the thickest part is thin. People think they are being duped by the big bad Jobs marketing cronies. Just go look at it yourself or google some images.

Now this is what I call trick photography!

I'm not having a go at you specifically, but I hate these kind of comments.

"Not powerful enougn" for what exactly?

It's more than powerful enough for browsing, email, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, iTunes, etc (i.e. 90% of what the general population are using their computers for).

Is is powerful enough for heavy video editing, Photoshop, etc? No but then this was never the intention.

I'm not that excited about thinness--sometimes I worry about bending my MBP when I pick it up one handed.

What interests me is the lightness. I've frequently pushed portability to the limit by holding it in one hand while standing/walking/sitting. Before too long, the wrist gets pretty sore. But my one-handed typing skills are greatly improved.

But that's another topic entirely ;)

Too be honest, I think this is better made then the MBP ever was, I had one last summer and was not impressed, and the MB is now the bottom of the line on build quality..This is built much better then anthing Apple has made in a few years

The Air is pretty sweet, but the Macbook is pretty outstanding as well. Especially the black :)

Its OK but I had all revs of the macbook and the build quality on them is crap.....there is a reason I had all Revs.........I am really surprised that the 1.6 did not start at 2500.00 really....

If the Air was 11" it could have started at $2kish easy. I never had any issues with the Macbook, and I had the CD version and the C2D version. Out of all of my Mac gear, the Macbook is what converted most of my friends. It has a clean smooth look to it, and to top it off, it has about 5:30 hrs of battery life. It takes 320gb of HD space at the moment, and it doesn't get hot on the lap.

As for the build quality, my CD Macbook went on a deployment for 7 months with me in some very rugged places. Sold it like new about 3 months ago. It was a little over a year old.

This is why I sold the MBP :) I haven't seen to many people complain about the power of the AIR. Mainly the compromises that were made to get the system thin. Which technically are not compromises for the market that this computer targets.
 
I would trade my MBP in for a MacBook if the MacBook had a backlit keyboard. That's pretty much the only reason I wouldn't grab one. I have been spoiled. I would hope that Apple would give at least the Black Macbook a backlit keyboard option in the future, but i can bet money on that not happening.

Why would you need a backlight keyboard I have never wished for one or even thought about it.

I have to say I was impressed with the BlackBook. I had both a MBP and a MB for a while and preferred the MB. I gave a co-worker the choice of the two thinking he would pick the MBP, but lo and behold, he picked the BlackBook. Luckily for me I now have the MBA... :D

I loved the look of the black MB, until a week of use and it begins to shine from even the lightest touch. It looks awful with finger marks on it. At least the white masks these and the aluminum even more so, but the the black.... beautiful only if you never touch it. Also the trackpad seemingly wares and looks marked far more than the other laptops.

i agree
my aunt bought a blackbook a while back.. and it was pretty cool
but yea after a bit of use even just a couple of days.. the keyboard and trackpad started getting wierd.. oil stains or liek grease from your hands started to do wierd stuff on it

and then i was glad i had a macbook pro hehe

Which TZ were you talking about there? On their site, all of them look god-awful to me. Carbon fiber? You should see the carbon fiber racquets i have broken. it scratches horribly too. Every one of those laptops I saw on there was more expensive than the Air, but they have 533 MHz buses, 1-1.3 GHz processors with HALF the L2 cache (a huge performance killer), many of them the ULV model, GMA950 graphics.

Crappy performance is an extremely high price to pay for one extra USB port, one firewire port, and on-board ethernet jack, and on-board 3G. Not to mention it's crappy performance on Windows, which makes it hurt even more.

I think Apple blew Sony out of the water, and their ultraportable is a lot less in a niche than that Vaio TZ.
