Apple today released the third public betas of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, allowing anyone with a compatible device to download and test the new software. The third betas come two weeks after Apple seeded the second betas.

You can get started by signing up on Apple's beta website and then opting in to the public beta by going to Settings > General > Software Update and choosing the iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 Public Beta option.

iOS 27 introduces Siri AI, a more capable version of Siri that can search the web, access your personal information, see what's on your screen, and take actions in and across apps. Siri in iOS 27 is more similar to Claude or ChatGPT than the prior version of Siri, with a dedicated Siri app for back-and-forth conversations. You can use Siri AI if you have a device that supports Apple Intelligence.

Apple updated the Liquid Glass design that debuted last year, adding a slider to adjust the transparency level and refining its look. There are new AI features in many of Apple's apps. Visual Intelligence moved to the Camera app and supports new features like getting the nutritional information for a meal or splitting a bill, and Siri is able to generate text for you or help you refine your writing with Write with Siri.

There are new AI photo editing tools in the Photos app, Safari can organize your tabs automatically, and you can create Shortcuts and Safari extensions using natural language commands. AirPods have custom EQ, the Home app supports 4K video cameras, and there are new child safety controls for parents.

Apple made dozens of improvements to device performance, and everything feels faster, even on older iPhones. Apps launch quicker, AirDrop transfers are faster, the keyboard loads quicker, and more.

Additional information on the new features in iOS 27 can be found in our dedicated iOS 27 roundup, with info on iPadOS 27 available in our separate iPadOS 27 roundup.

Waiting so impatiently for final release on this one. Even the betas run better already. For example, all through iPadOS 26 it had me enter my numeric PIN with the full keyboard every time. It technically works but is asinine and needlessly difficult, like the rest of 26. I notice when going to install this update from beta 2 that it's finally back to the sensible number entry pad.

Bad question I know but…is it ok for daily use?
I've had the second public beta on my 16 Pro Max for a couple of weeks. Thus far, the only things I've noticed are some flickers when typing on the keyboard, and a little inconsistency with one app, which is a rather local one, not a major app.

Do a backup, read up on how to dial it back to iOS 26 if you need to, and give it a whirl.

I joined the public beta two weeks ago on an iPhone Air. The battery drain has been tough for me the last two weeks, but I am just now downloading this version so I don't know if it's better. Everything else has been really good.

I own the 17PM on dev beta 5 since beta 3 with no major issues and it’s my daily driver and all my apps and resource heavy games work fine.

I first installed iOS 27 beta 1 on my 16PM and had WiFi connectivity issues, overheating, fps drops and other issues that made me wait for a later beta due to app optimization/compatibility.

I don’t know how the earlier models stack up but iOS 27 seems made for 17 and up in terms of smoothness and functionality especially with background processes that heat up the device and fluid multitasking. My storage is 32gb iOS and 12gb system data with Siri turned off.

16 Pro, jumped on at first Public Beta, has been pretty solid so far, definitely the best beta series Apple has launched. No major issues, no overheating, etc. Battery has been about the same, maybe a smidge better than iOS 26, hard to tell. Performance definitely seems better, as far as opening apps, moving around the OS, etc. Haven't used the new Siri very much, but damn does the indexing take a long time. And it seems to rebuild the index after every beta so far. You'd think a processor as powerful as the one in this phone could do the indexing overnight while on a charger. The first time (after PB1 install) took almost 2 weeks.

Curious about the two weeks. Are you saying your phone indexes for a full two weeks or indexes off and on for two weeks with use.

It showed the indexing search/siri message in settings for almost 2 weeks. It was stuck at 40-something percent for over a week, I kept putting it on the charger to try and push it along but it didn't seem to make a difference. May have been a beta bug or something, but it eventually finished. And then PB2 released and the indexing message came back, but it only lasted a couple days that time. Now PB3 today the indexing message is back again.

Yeah, indexing after every update is tedious. I’m pretty sure it contributed to my 1-2% battery health loss on my 16PM lol I made it to 350 charges at 100% health charging at 100 with optimize charge off with heavy use averaging 8-10 hours a day. I was installing all the betas, sometimes would downgrade, would switch Apple accounts for backups, etc. lol I know my battery was like f me, eventually I turned off all search settings to lower indexing procs and skipped a few updates.

I’m at 96% after 410 cycles but I’m also on a regular 16 Pro with smaller battery and I have been using the 80% charge since I got the phone. But almost all of that charging has been on a MagSafe charger so I feel it is holding up pretty good. 27 betas haven’t impacted battery health for me, so far. I think things like that are coincidence.

Edit - also, it dropped pretty quickly from 100% health to 97 and then 96. It made it to over 300 cycles at 100% health. I don’t think the readings are 100% accurate, and/or it takes some time for it to calibrate and show the correct battery health. It’s all just estimates, I think, since calculating active battery percentage on its own is difficult enough with current battery technology.

Yes supposedly they ship above 100% and it’s not abnormal for them to jump straight from 100 to 98 or 96. Or drop one percent and then drop to like 96. I really don’t plan on upgrading the 17PM, maybe until the 20 or if the 19 had some huge leap in ram or something equivalent. I’ve thrown everything at this phone n it runs, the only option would be to get an entirely different company’s phone plus I believe the price is going to keep rising at some point, I can see them upgrading ram and minimum storage size to justify a higher price tag.

The first couple of beta releases were awesome. Worked better than 26, even as a beta. This beta isn't as good as the others. I hope the next build comes quick.
