That case doesn't even make any sense - something like a smart keyboard wouldn't be able to connect. The only thing that would work is some kind of magsafe like charging connector.

This!

With that case design, there is no way a Smart Connector's pins could even contact the back of the iPhone due to the thickness of the case and the size of that opening. Makes no sense.

Early case leaks don't mean much. That said I can see the usefulness of a smart connector for the iPhone, but not so much for a keyboard as it's used on the iPad Pro. It could enable battery cases without "the chin", or other smart cases, with... I dunno, extra LED notification lights? Perhaps magnetic charging connectors? We'll see where (and if) Apple goes with this.

Even if there is a smart connector- how do these case makers know what type of clearance is needed around it to allow alleged smart case accessories to work?

I think the battery case idea is a great one. If that was possible, you'd save a lot of size on a battery case.

Same here. These case makers must have allot of money to burn or manufacturing is just that damn cheap in China. Not sure why you would burn the money producing these cases when ultimately they are as clueless as us.

They probably aren't using the best materials either and only doing limited runs. It's probably already part of their testing new cases for new designs.

Guessing it's not possible that the connector won't have anything to do with any wireless charging?

The adapter for headphones better not be a $29.99 extra.

It will be, and it will be a pain for those of us who use headphones on other devices... like our next generation Macbook Pros, with included headphone jack (but no lightning connector)

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an iPhone Pro line, and an iPhone 7 this year. The Pro including the smart connector, and the regular 7 won't.

Oh it won't be. It will be 39.99 and have a 8 to 12 week lead time. People will build web sites and register domain names just to help the faithful try to find one, without waiting months for Apple to ship it to you or God forbid find it in stock in their own stores.

Wait, what? The smart connector could open up amazing possibilities in new cases. Case that support wireless charging or have landscape keyboards for those weird people who need them. What about storage increase inside of the cases or new iHome like appliances. That's only the stuff mentioned in the article but I'm sure developers could think of more opportunities.
How can you accuse Apple of putting form over function one day yet choose form over this function?
Agreed. Simply a dock that I could lift the phone on and off with one hand would be great and there are many better possibilities.

Those idiotic case-makers releasing cases without having final specs continue to amaze me.

It's safe to say this is what it will look like. It's idiotic to assume apple will pull a rabbit surprise out of the bag...like loyal hopefuls are praying for. this is what it will look like and unless its a flexible phone that goes around your wrist, realistic specs have been leaked for months now.

Apple could release a vr headset with extra hardware/sensors inside, that is paired with an iPhone 7 plus/pro by smart connector.

I think the smart connector would be fantastic on the back of an iPhone... Imagine:

- Being able to put the iPhone onto a dock into your car without having to plug anything in, just place it onto a magnetic mount.. or on a desk, letting it rest. I find it's a bit of a pain to put my phone 6 into a standup dock in the dark because the edges are so rounded..
- Wall chargers could be redesigned without trailing wires, a stand and a contact plate. If it was a magsafe style connector, you could just snap it directly to the charger..

Lots of ideas..

No headphone jack and the dual-camera system is all but confirmed. I see no use for a Smart Connector. If it's included and Apple market it as connecting battery cases to the phone, they are basically saying the battery life is rubbish so I don't see that happening. A keyboard on a 5.5-inch phone? No. So I see no need for it.

As others have pointed out, many uses other than admitting the battery life is rubbish. Try reading through the last couple of pages.

As for my own contribution -- a case that includes a 3.5mm adapter should the headphone jack actually be removed from the phone. A keyboard is a ridiculous idea for most, but also a nice option to have for some situations I can imagine.

You're being a little too limited in your imagination.

It would be pretty cheap to print out I think. This would be from the 500 000 places on eBay that sell cases for about $2 including postage
What I don't understand is how someone can spend a large chunk of money on an iPhone then put a cheap, nasty case from eBay on it.

I don't understand who would buy an iPhone 7 case for a phone that isn't released yet nor do we know will look like.

This, and I would hope that IF there's a smart connector it would be like the iPad and be on the landscape side.

Also, we already know that case designers will mock up and prototype cases based on rumors and rumors of rumors so they can be first to market.

Phones are typically used in portrait mode, though given cases and all, I am dubious as to whether there is any one "right" place to put the smart connector on an iPhone without it being blocked.

it will

it has to...otherwise many won't want to buy it.

No it won't. The last thing Apple wants you to do is keep using the same old technology you were using with your old iPhone, and never try Lightning or wireless audio.

Add to that, in the event the smart connector is real and operates as rumored, many customers may opt for other options rather than an adapter, like a case with a built-in 3.5mm adapter.

Your conclusion is most likely wrong also. A recent survey of 1,000 customers at an Apple Store by Macnn.com showed the vast majority of customers weren't concerned the headphone jack would be eliminated.

Apple will give customers a pair of lightning earbuds in the box. If anything, I'd expect an adapter to use with their old Macs until Apple adds Loghtning ports to their new Macs. Then again, it wouldn't be the first new Apple accessory that want compatible with old hardware.
