People wouldn't get anything if they didn't "gripe".

People complaining is the motivation for Apple to prioritise improvements.
People like to think so, but it's rather unclear if that really means anything, or at least anything of real importance, in the eyes of Apple or many other companies (at least most of the time).

this is a non issue. how long are passwords? 4-10 characters? You want the faster 3rd party keyboards to type paragraphs not passwords.....in other words who cares?

Non issue to me. I'd rather them not having the potential for Getting that data

They don't - third party keyboards won't have internet access. (Apparently there is the possibility that they may ask for it, and the user would have to confirm - but they won't have it by default.)

If someone installs a 3rd party keyboard that is more accurate for them then typing passwords is when it's the most useful.

3rd party keyboards might be able to store your password input and upload it to a server. This is probably a security feature... I don't mind as long as you can use Touch ID to replace most passwords.

The Apple keyboard could do the same. It comes down to a matter of trust. Apple is not willing to trust third party keyboard makers to not do this. Parhaps it is part of Apple's security policy.

It's also a matter of being to type passwords accurately when you don't see what you typed. Some people use long and complex passwords that are a mix of uppper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. One reason people use third party keyboards is that they are able to type more accurately with them that the default keyboard. I would prefer to type my password correctly the first time more often with a keyboard I am more comfortable with than have to switch to a keyboard I am not comfortable with and use rarely.

EXACTLY. I'm thinking about making my own keyboard because I don't want a new typing technique or password managing. I just want:
Dark translucent (system keyboard for spotlight searches)
Case-sensitive keys
Caps lock glow
Number row above the letters

If you make this I would happily download!

this is not an issue for me

passwords will eventually disappear whenever apps get updated with the touchID API

secure text inputs like credit card info i can live with it, it will protect myself, i trust apple more than flesky

I'm happy Apple restricted this. for anyone to say that 3rd party keyboard doesn't have internet access. They can ask. And once they're allowed it's all free ride. It's good that there is a mechanism to protect us. This is exactly why I trust iOS more than Android.

You know what? I think that's great! It's installing 3rd-party keyboards, but with security. I don't want any 3rd-party keyboard taking a record of my password. Yes, Swype or Fleksy could be very trustworthy for many people, but I'm sure their security procedures aren't close to Apple's, and I don't know if their keyboards have some security flaws or not.

While you may know the consequences of using a 3rd-party keyboard, the millions and millions of iPhone users don't, but people have requested a lot for it. Apple has responded and enabled 3rd-party keyboards, but they don't want to put people's vulnerable information at risk.

I like how Apple cares somewhat about people's security, unlike some of its competitors. They're opening up iOS 8, but with a guard ;)

It's a shame they couldn't put something on that would restrict keyboard makers from receiving any data on user inputs. But I appreciate Apple thinking about protecting my info.

Sorry but how can you be sure? Is that because Tim said "I read your emails"? Of course, what do you expect him to say. People did almost crash the internet with their "gripe" about iOS 7 icons and colours! How many visual changes did we get on iOS 8? Zero!!! (Except for a full photo call which the entire thing about it being removed was a bit bizarre)

I think the reason why Apple is doing what it is doing is the competition! Competition is stronger now! Apple needs to give its users what competition have and more, in a safer and better way in order to stay ahead and attract customers.

It seems they will be doing that already by providing an option, but likely take it further for more sensitive data input like passwords and the like.

Um, yeah, my passwords for anything I actually care about are a lot longer than that. And they're handled by 1Password, which is why it'd be nice if there was a way for 1Password to develop a keyboard to facilitate password entry on iOS.

Extensions would allow 1password to build an extension that is literally "LONG PRESS ON TEXT FIELD > POP UP OPTION "FILL WITH 1PASSWORD" completely independent of any keyboard you're using

People who think forcing stock keyboard on secure text entry fields is somehow going to halt 1Password are being absolutely ridiculous. 1Password doesn't want to be your new keyboard, they want to be your password manager. Extensions gives them a way to easily allow you to use Swype or whatever keyboard you want, and STILL use 1Password for your passwords across the device.

They don't need a keyboard! They shouldn't want a keyboard!

Try entering a non-pronounceable password via Swype. It won't work very well. I think Apple's solution -- which also happens to help maintain the security of sensitive information like passwords -- is fine.
