Some memory technologies such as LPDDR3 and LPDDR4/X must be soldered, there’s no socketed package available.

So the option is between slow, power hungry socketed RAM, or fast, power-saving soldered RAM.
That's mostly relevant for laptops & irrelevant for the iMac we're talking about, yet the MBP 16's ram type is available in sodimm's. There's also DDR4 4000 speed sodimms which match or exceed LPDDR4 at this time.

Do they need to be paired? I bought a single 32Gb, do I need another matching one?
I'm not sure on that. You could just try it and do some performance tests (i'm not sure on the best ones), although buying matching would be ideal. You'd end up with 72GB RAM, which may or may not be overkill for you, so test first.

Ended up buying another 32GB. 72Gb might be overkill, but I might get back into video editing. Also won't hurt my Logic Projects.

I do enjoy reading these Forum threads. Unbelievable how many wannabe tycoons think they could run the most successful company in the world better than the ones already doing it.

I would assume Apple sells a lot of units to large entities where the person speccing the machine is not the person paying for it. That opens the door for such massive markups. If it's your own money/shop then you can dodge a cost the corporate buyers contribute to Apple's bottom line. Maybe it's a good thing...

I am absolutely astounded by the sheer level of misunderstanding which is so explicitly conveyed in this thread. After many years of intensive scientific discovery, including but not limited to innovating various levels of hardware exuberance, it is painfully obvious that the reason Apple can should charge more for ram is courage.

The whole point of this article could be in one sentence...

"Please use our Amazon affiliate link so we can make a few dollars... "

Nothing wrong with that but to write a story that Apple charges more for RAM is silly. The next article "Apple's CEO is still Tim Cook"
