Third party screen colour settings?

I now have an early Intel Mac (A1207), which replaces my dead G5, that is currently running 10.6.8. The problem is that the white background/black text setting is seriously tiring on my eyes, but the invert option just turns everything 'negative', which is totally useless for websites and images. Whilst I was without a Mac, I had been using my Windows 7 laptop and really appreciated being able to have a BLACK screen background with WHITE or other text colour. Are there better colour control options in another version of OSX or third party software that will allow me to have the colours that best suit my viewing needs?

Are you talking about the terminal? Because going into settings gives you themes and colour choices for everything. Everything else is dependent on who made the application.

Problem solved. I found an add-on for my browser (firefox) that does what I want.
