Just my two cents

Just my two cents, but surely wouldn't it be better to design a reversible female connector rather then a reversible male connector and implement it on all new chargers/computers?

That way it would be backwards compatible with more devices.

What do you people do to your cables to get them to shred like that?

I've still got ancient 30 pin cables knocking around that, being grimy aside, are in near-perfect condition. Same with my Mac charger. I still use the charger from my '07 Plastic MacBook on my newer MBP, it's still in almost as good condition as it was seven years ago. Bit greyer, but no splits at all.

The only cable I've ever had give me any problems was a knock off Lightning cable that shorted out my Mac, fritzing the hard drive. My phone was fine, but I'm never using an uncertified cable again, even though it pisses me off how expensive they are.

Given how flimsy the male end in the original article looks, I'd rather have the cable break than the socket in my computer.

To be fair in ALL those examples you have it was due to a cheap CHARGER not cable. This is the difference here. I wouldn't touch an actual cheap mains connector with a barge pole, but a cheap cable?! Its can only fall apart the same way as Apple's and it only carries the same limited ampage (e.g. very low) from the USB plug. As long as you're using an official (or at least certifed/expensive USB plug) a 3rd party cable on its own its not going to be able to start a fire!

thank you. i would also get into the difference between 220v and 110v, UL testing but it would be a gigantic waste of my time given the the examples he posted

i would venture to guess from wrapping or rolling around fingers to put away. Wires inside twist, white outer shield does not. Same thing happens to extension/drop cords which is why you should never wrap them around your hand/elbow to put them away

PS. Im LOVING my reversible USB lightning cable. thanks truffol!!!!!!:D;):p

Experience with Truffol cables

I bought two of these, arrived about a week ago.

They are both a very snug fit - much harder to get in than any other USB cable I've ever had, and harder than I really like.

One of them worked fine (on 7.1.2, where some of my older aftermarket cables stopped working due to Apple's clamping down on non-certified cables, the other one didn't work at all.

I've sent them a warranty request, will see if they want to make me send the bad one back (which isn't worth it to me).

I do like the reversibility feature (USB cables are one of the worst designed user interfaces of any cable, since you can't tell by feel which way it goes), but given my experience thus far, and the quality issues, I probably won't be buying from Truffol again.

Update - to their credit, they responded within a few hours - they're sending me a replacement cable, no need to send in my old one.
