Unfortunately, 1Password for Mac still does not have iCloud syncing. I bought this last week along with the iOS versions and the Mac version is sorely missing it. Read the recent reviews. People are mentioning it.

Aye, but AgileBit's blog states that it is coming to the Mac App Store version. So patience will be rewarded in time.

Oh that's great then. Yea I'm completely new to 1Password (just got the app last week) so I haven't been up to date with the news. Definitely good news.

1password a ripoff

I think 1password has just been marketed well. I've used Splashid for years and find it fine, much cheaper and just as effective.
David Sparks in Mac Users advertises 1password and does a really good job of selling it.
I'm not saying 1password isn't a good product, but much more expensive than others.

Perhaps people don't want to rely on free apps for their sensitive data?

At least in regards to free software (not free as in free beer but in free speech) it is superior to proprietary software like 1Password, as you can study the source-code to check no one's screwing with you and stealing or selling your data.
I must agree, though, that "costless" software in the AppStore, which is still proprietary, imposes a higher risk of having your data sold.
But please don't mix both cases right away, because 1Password is not the best choice in the global scale.

Great example of human psychology. "If it's more expensive, it must be better." You've been conditioned well, my friend. Nothing about 1Password is inherently superior to cheaper alternatives. I, along with millions of others, have been using LastPass, which works great and costs zero dollars, for years. Other free alternatives such as DashLane offer master password selection features 1Password can only dream of.

Except that AgileBits provides support for the product which won't go away because developer(s) lost interest. Plus 1Password is the only product that covers all the platforms I need.

I don't have a problem buying a product I like. I didn't like LastPass and I love 1Password.

Yes, I can't wait to review source code
Especially cryptography - because we are all so knowledgeable in that area!

It's not the best case for you.

Dammit! I just bought 1Password (about 2 weeks ago) at full price $50. Oh well. I will say it is a really good app though, I'd say it's a no brainer at $25, but at the original $50 I was "umming and ahhing" quite a bit, but got App Store vouchers for Xmas so went for it.

BTW, I contacted the Agilebits, and Mac App Store users WILL get a free upgrade to version 4 when it's released.

PopClip looks good and people here seem to love it. BUT looking at the history of the price, on Jan 18th and Jan 20th, it was only $1.99. On sale now is $2.99. They OFTEN drop the price to $1.99 or $2.99; thus if you want to save a buck, wait.

The $25 discount on 1Password is very tempting.

I hope Apple continues with this kind of promotion.

I've been using 1Password since I bought it in a bundle. It is a great programme but I agree that it's a little expensive at $50. The sale price is what it should be sold at.

PopClip, Fantastical, Yoink are well worth the purchase price IMHO....

Can someone please tell me what all the fuss is over 1password?

I realise what it does, but my only thought is that if I only have one password to access all my other passwords... Isn't this just worse than having several different passwords? That would mean that if someone were to steal my laptop or something, they have all my passwords for everything stored on there?

What happens if I forget my master password? Is it easy to reset? Is it easy enough for a thief to reset it?

I think if you loose your master password, all passwords are lost, noone can recover, 1password developers neither.

Edit: from support site

What do I do if I forgot my master password?
1Password creates your data file using the password you provided when you first launched the application. This password is not kept anywhere and it is never logged. Furthermore, there is no “back door” mechanism to recover your data or password. This approach is very important in order to be able to say that 1Password keeps your data safe and secure. However, because of it, once your password is forgotten, there is nothing we can do to help you recover it.

I imagine generally most password theft would happen as a result of a sites user database being compromised rather than an individual users laptop being stolen. By using an application like this, it allows you to use a randomly generated password on every site you visit (something like 'sjdDF$vjY&^Tuygfsdygf^^$hgvsjh) that you would never remember yourself, but is both unique to that site as well as being hard to brute force. If that site does get compromised and that password is discovered, then only that one account should be affected.

The softwares use in my eyes is to make it easier to use safer password systems such as a different password on each site, and one that can not be easily guessed. Many peoples alternative is to use the same password everywhere, which is much worse. Is 1Password and other password managers infallible? No, certainly not, but they are a tool towards implementing good practices in favour of worse ones.

Generally speaking, many security measures go out the door once a user has access to your system (it's been physically stolen). In many cases there may not be much you can do other than having physical security also available.

Is there any feature in 1Password to protect against local acces to the password database like autodelete in brute force attempt?

The password management tool I'm using - SplashData's SplashID Safe is already very affordable on regular price. Careful product comparisons reveal the same compatibility and features. I therefore opt for the well-established and long-time developer around because they provide fast update and highly reliable support.
