people who change their tones and fonts frequently are people with big time in their hands...what's wrong with the font and the tones that came with the iPhone 4? it's very apple and very classy.

Quite the contrary. I'm very busy and this is a feature that saves me time.
Look, ALL I want to be able to do is to have my SMS tone for certain people be the same as the ringtone I have for those same people (only shorter) just like I had on my POS cell phone circa 1997.
Now why that is SUCH a strain on the imagination of Apple/Steve Jobs is beyond me...
And, look, if YOU don't want to do that, I'm OK with it. I won't FORCE you to to adopt my approach. Just don't force ME to have to hear the same #$%&^ tone when I'm out in public and watch 15 people all reach for their iPhone at the same time because it's impossible to tell whose *&^&*#@ phone it is...
Is this feature critical? Of course not. But very few features of the phone are really critical.
Why do I want this?
Because I receive texts throughout my busy days. Texts from some people need an immediate response. Some responses can wait. It would be great to know who has sent me a text without necessarily having to look at the screen because sometimes that's just difficult to do. That way, I can respond to the ones that need my attention and wait on the others. It's the same reason I use custom ring tones.

+1 I agree with you, it is slightly ridiculous to not have such a common feature. I've resorted to a jailbreak to provide myself the option, but still.. like you said, some responses need immediate attention while others (girlfriend or wive) don't :p

Who knows why it was left out. Anyone ever think that maybe it was because they were running out of time to get this thing out and decided to scrap the addition of petty custom ringtones so they could get actual important things finished and polished?

I, just like none of you, know exactly what happened for sure, but I tend to lean that way over the, "Steve Jobs is an evil bastard and purposely left out letting me add my own custom text tones!" idea.

And if you need that so bad, then go back to your circa 1997 phone since it was so nice. I'm sure you can get one really cheap these days. No contract either!

Just my 2 cents...

As I said in my previous post, it's not a critical feature. But it would be nice. And it's not like the coding necessary to add this is difficult to do given that it has been a feature on plenty of phones. Obviously, I knew of this limitation BEFORE I bought the iPhone and still bought it in spite of this.
As for them 'running out of time', remember that this is something that a number of people have complained about for as long as the iPhone has been out. It's similar to the complaints made about custom ringtones which eventually resulted in Apple adding the ability to do just that.
I'm not sitting around worrying about Steve Jobs/Apple being evil. I just find it interesting that a commonly available feature, one that a number of people have requested over a long period of time, has been left out of the ios for so long.

The tones are just fine. Pointing this out as a problem shows how terrific the iPhone is!!

+1. I agree. If people are complaining/whining about not being able to set a custom text tone, about something so insignificant, then the phone must be awesome with everything else.

I understand that some people place a higher priority to something as this, while I place it very low, but in the grand scope of the phone....its quite minor as compared to something like the phone not working as a phone. ;)

They're text tones, at least we can still be notified.
Just not the way we want to be notified. Sounds like my spoiled daughter. haha

why would you want different tone for each person? people are equal.you should respond to everyone.you should look at your iPhone all the time.this is what the retina display is made for.

i have different tones for different peeps, i tend to respond to my really close friends asap even if busy, then there's people who're just friends, i respond to them as and when, no urgency. then there's work people, who i just respond when i feel like it. you don't get that? fair enough, just don't question what others do.

IMO. This is FAR more important than most features. I receive texts on a regular basis, something that happens multiple times per day is far more important than AirPlay IMO.

they'll bring it in evetually. for now, it's really not a big thing, not life threatening or even that critical.

One time in band camp... Lol

But once I was in school and I hear my text tone (electronic) and I go to check it and the teacher goes "no it wasn't yours", then she pulls her iphone out

So yea it gets annoying
