I don't really judge what phone I'm getting from how it handles a drop. These smartphones now are all glass, and are all about thinness, lightness and (usually) small bezels. They aren't ever going to withstand drops well.

Either don't drop it, or get a case, or get apple care +. Sometimes I do all three!
