She is also now refusing to have the big iPad, it's "so old fashioned" and "too heavy" for a girl (she will be 19 later this month ).

Everyone who handles it wants one, Apple have created a monster.

I am living proof. I had zero intention of buying one & poo poo'd it as being a shrunken iPad2 with lousy screen and last year's processor running this year's apps.

Well I was still curious so I popped into the store today to take a look. Immediately I was taken with the way it felt in my hand. So perfect. But I was underwhelmed, as I knew I would be by the screen, esp. books. I think took a look at the iPad 4, which I had on order to replace my 3. WOW! It felt like a brick. I couldn't believe it. I thought maybe it was heavier than the 3, but no. I then left the store.

Like a girl you casually met, avg face, nice body, but total knockout personality, the iPad mini stayed in my mind for the rest of the day. I had to feel it again in my hands. So I went to another Apple store, and played with it again just to make sure. I had to have one -- and so I now do. Black 16GB. I canceled my iPad 4 order and will keep the 3 for another year as it's value is pretty much shot anyway.

But next round Apple must put in a Retina screen. The screen IS horrible, esp. for book reading just like the original iPad and iPad 2.

I wouldn't give up the retina display either. Or the better processor. I use my ipad mainly for web browsing and ebooks and I love the size of it. If I want something smaller I have my iphone. I don't need a middle-size iThing.

I agree. Returning the mini. Very disappointed the display is pixelated while reading / websurfing.
I swear I wish I had the bionic eyesight some of you seem to have. Seriously? I've got a 3 and a mini side by side and, to me, there is no discernible difference in reading at a normal distance. I guarantee you that Apple could box up the iPad 2 in an iPad 3 box and over half the people on here would be going nuts about how great the screen is. In something like this, perception is everything.

I expect this will happen in my house too. My wife is getting her mini today and I'm already thinking I'll buy one also. Even yesterday I caught myself thinking damn, this full size iPad is SO heavy. Never once thought that before, and I haven't even touched the mini yet.

I felt that way long before the mini was announced. The full-sized ipad feels like you are lugging around a laptop.

It's one of those products that seems cutting-edge today, but will be seen as comically large in the next 3-4 years, like a 1980s version of a cell phone that was carried around in a briefcase.

If Apple's coders were competent, we'd be able to have multiple logins on our iPads. Making it easier to share.

people don't like to share iPads ... particularly teenagers :D

I also agree ... the large iPads will seem like DinoiPads soon.

Then by your accounts my 6 year old should love the white one I got her for Christmas then :D.

I hope you're joking and playing up this "problem", otherwise your family sounds ungrateful.

Ordered a black 16GB from Apple last week and then discovered John Lewis had some white stock today so I dropped by on my lunch break and picked one up with the intention of returning the Apple order that UPS eventually dropped off about 17:30.

Problem started when I got home, no one wants to take over the big iPad, told my wife she could have it, no, she wants a white Mini now. Daughter came home and has now decided we must hate her if I won't give her the black Mini for her birthday :(

Looks like my "cheap" little upgrade is going to end up costing me big.

As evidence in your post- your wife and daughter want it.
It seems mostly woman want the mini.
The guys I've spoken to are sticking with the larger- much better screen.

Really? You have a strange idea of family, it's as a simple as, I was hoping to unload the big iPad to my wife (who earns just about as much as me) and she said no, I prefer the Mini, I'll rather have one of them.

Do you give your children second hand presents? She has declared she wants a Mini for her birthday, whether she'll get one is still uncertain, but she declared she wants one, and has decided her big iPad is no longer fit for purpose.

No gratitude or ingratitude involved, or do you have a relationship where what you say goes? And your wife should be seen and not heard? Or else.....

People are saying your daughter sounds spoiled. For your wife, you'll have to buy her an iPad mini in the color/size she wants because she is your wife and you want peace in the house.

As for your daughter, does she have a job? Does she do chores around the house on a regular basis?

You mentioned she's turning 19 later month and has declared that she wants an iPad for her birthday.

Did you and your daughter have a previous arrangement on an iPad mini or was the original agreement for a full-sized iPad? A declaration doesn't constitute an agreement.

If she wants to change the terms of the agreement, you should ask her to bring something to the table so that she can learn to compromise (perhaps half of all the house chores for the next 2 months, excluding her birthday/birthday weekend?). I guarantee you she will cherish her iPad mini much more having invested some of her time into earning it.

You allow your children to just declare what they want for x, y, z occasion? How about teaching them to ask for what they want and then showing them that they can always ask but whether or not they get it will depend on their behaviors, contributions, or how they listen to you?

This is what's confusing. Does your daughter actually act like this or are you joking?

you think apple's coders aren't competent?
they don't want you to have another login. they want you to buy another device, similar reasons why they don't want you to have microSD.

Lets not turn this into another argument. Speaking about children or how one raised them is crossing the line...

Gee you came home with a new toy and now your family also wants a new toy instead of your hand me down. Shocker that never happens.
