Someone assures me this is the new MacBook Neo.
Even though it says MacBook Air on the screen… he assures me it's an Apple Store mistake.
So, to all the experts here, can you confirm that I can still recognize a MacBook Air?

It looks like a store of some kind. If he assures you it is a Neo then presumably he will sell it to you for Neo price. If it is a current Air (M4 or M5 model) you will get a good bargain. OTOH the place is obviously dodgy so be careful!.

You can also be sure it is an M5 MacBook Air (and not M4 or earlier) because the location of the icons on the fn, control, option, and command keys is different (on all keyboards, not just US English).

Compare the images here: https://www.macrumors.com/2026/03/10/macbook-keyboard-change/

Here's the Tech Specs page for the Air:
and for the Neo:

Scroll down to the "Charging and Expansion" section and look at the ports.
Or see how much RAM it has (> 8G), and maybe everything else in Settings | General | About

Why would you doubt the store selling it? Logically seems like a big jump for the store to misname a product not just on whatever paper display they have out but also on the software side as well. If you were to put money on Apple screwing up this product or your friend being incorrect who would you really put your money on?

I obviously have much more confidence in the Apple Store.
But since he's so sure of himself and tells me I don't know anything about it, I wanted confirmation from the web.

That's what I think too, the demo mode for Apple Stores is included in the OS, it's not a possible error on the part of the seller.

And Apple would never have made a black keyboard if it wasn't backlit.

I don't know if that photo is from an Apple Store or a third-party retailer in Thailand, but it looks like a standard Apple display table -- the three colors seen are all M5 MacBook Air colors.
