I went to download the new office apps for my iPad 3 today, but apparently I can't. I have been looking forward to these why a while now. But I can't because I choose not to download iOS 7 on my iPad 3. I prefer a smooth fluid textured operating system. Anyone else in my shoes here?

Bummer. Update to a fairly superior version of the OS or gtfo

So you waste time adding support for iOS versions that are less than 3% of the user base by going back to iOS 4 & 5?! what a waste of time and effort...

As I explained above, it doesn't take much time as my apps have been developed (and present in the AppStore) since 2009; that is, I've started with no-ARC, no-storyboards and no-autolayout. With this codebase, it's actually very easy to maintain full iOS4+ compatibility when adding new functionality.

Of course, for a brand new project, I may decide to go iOS6+ and/or iOS7+ only, depending on the circumstances (whether I can make use of autolayout etc.)

But as mentioned, that's nothing new in the computing world. If a person decides not to upgrade, they shouldn't expect new applications to be supported on a legacy system. Apple with iOS does take this to a new level but its not like its a new phenomenon that took the OP by complete surprise. He chose to stick with an older OS and I don't knock him for that, its his decision but there are consequences to those decisions.

I've most versions of the Windows OS since 3.1, and I've had to leave apps behind along the way, or not been able to use certain apps until I updated. That's the way it works for every OS.

Very true.

Hey Matt,

You've obviously needed a vent and got that, but perhaps it would be better to put in your signature that you simply will not update to iOS7. It would save a lot of people posting the same thing... and you constantly having to state it in your posts.

Just a thought.

And it's funny, now when I got back and use my wife's ipad2 with ios6, it is incredibly frustrating to use.

Some people are just resistant to change. New designs take a bit of time with first hand use to adapt to, just like any change in design, but only impatient or stubborn people won't go through that. My dad is running his iPad 2 on 7.1 and has no issues, it's not sluggish like iOS 7 was. Yes, it's not as fast as the iPad 4 or Air, but then it hugely fast when it was on iOS 6 either.
