It's all too easy for some people to get carried away in the wishy washy love story with Apple and Steve Jobs, but he was just a guy with a bunch of great product ideas and Apple are a company of well-screwed-on heads. They didn't invent the Internet, or the wheel, or come across electricity or nuclear fission.

I respectfully disagree. By your logic, Henry Ford didn't change the world since the wheel was already invented at that point. All he did was figure out how to make 4 wheels support passengers and go fast. Edison didn't change the world... electricity was around before he helped light up the night in American cities.

Point is, Apple took a lot of great ideas, put them together, and created products that have found their way into peoples lives for the better.

Just for good measure, the man who is credited for creating the world wide web (which I recognize is not the same as the Internet), did so using a NeXT machine - something that Steve and his team created.

think about it this way though..

what size was the camera did you use 10 years ago? How big are cell phones now? IMHO, size & convenience are critical here. Most people prefer using their cell phones because they already have it on them 100% of the time when they are out and about. But not a whole lot of people would prefer to carry a big device such as the iPad and enjoy taking pictures IF they have a phone that could do it just as well.

Secondly, for the consumers, I don't see any obvious advantages of using devices such as the iPad vs the iPhone or many of the android phones. There might be some (who knows.. one of the android tablet coming out may have a 50mega pixel sensor and f2.0), but I stress.. obvious advantages. Like the first time when you used your iPhone 1.0 coming from a Nokia or Windows mobile obvious. :)

Which is why I'm extremely puzzled that Apple didn't upgrade the -front- facing camera, and yet upgraded the rear facing one. They may have their reasons (from market research, etc) but it doesn't mean I have to agree with them.

Thats what phones are for?

It would be easier if Steve Jobs was a team player as then we could say he played his part. And I suspect in the early years (80's) he was more so but...

Many contributed to the success of Apple.

As for the OP's experience being his vision, I think it was part of his vision, but lets not forget he was also motivated by profit, success and being the center of attention.

Henry Ford brought the mass production of cars to fruition and sold them at a reasonable price that saw huge numbers of people owning a car for the first time - a revolutionary transport option. Edison came up with long lasting light bulbs that were practical in millions of homes.

Apple just brought us luxury products that we use instead of the alternative (Windows PCs, other MP3 players, Android smartphones). I love Apple products, I just don't worship Apple or their CEO.

I respectfully agree with you on this point. Great innovative products but at a premium price only to be owned by people with a moderately large wedge of cash. Now, if Apple / Steve Jobs had done something egalitarian such as producing technology at a price point that would contribute in uniting the World despite socio economic position that would have been more worthy of high praise.

Not going to disagree that some apple products are viewed as luxury, but Apple was right at the forefront of personal computing in the late 70's and 80's. They were the first to bring a GUI rather than command line prompts and make the computer something regular folks could put on their desks and be productive.

It's basically the same as Ford and Edison, just with computers. Hundreds copied these men and their companies which is why you have a lot of options when it comes to buying a car. Same thing now with ultrabooks, phones, and tablets. Apple leads the market, others follow.

I don't worship Apple, but I recognize they've done more than make shiny gadgets. Just trying to give some respect where it's due.

My friend has been sending me iMessages of his vacation taken with his iPad 3. Not too shabby the camera in that thing.

I was in France last weekend and I was Face timing with my Family back home in England! Pure genius!

And with reference to the original post, my 2 year old loves the iPad, she can use it with easy and she remembered how to do it so easily! Its such an amazing device!

Yep. Great story. A bunch of white girls from wealthy families in the backyard of their mansion near the lake running around with their iPads taking photos.

No care in the world if they drop the $600 devices or not. Daddy will buy 'em a new one.

The Apple way. :D

If you have nothing to add and have no idea of the context of the story, then don't comment.

It's surprisingly pleasant to have a 10" screen for a viewfinder. I'm 34 and have 2 small kids. I am way past the point of caring how I look when I'm taking a video/picture. I LOVE having all that screen real estate as my viewfinder. On my iPad 2 I usually didn't bother because everything came out so grainy and pixelated. On my new iPad, if it's in my hand and they're doing something worth saving, I have no qualms about using that iPad camera to get it captured.

Steve Jobs also said "when you get down to 1.3 pounds, a tenth of a pound is A LOT".(iPad 2 announcement) Then he passes away and the iPad is heavier and thicker to support the retina display that is thicker since the thinner SHARP display was not "up to standards" yet. Makes me wonder if Steve would have approved this.

Things are changing. The next couple of years will be very interesting. It's Tim's show now.

I'll join into this fray with two direct quotes from Steve Jobs.

Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me.

Also,

Bottom line is, I didn't return to Apple to make a fortune. I've been very lucky in my life and already have one. When I was 25, my net worth was $100 million or so. I decided then that I wasn't going to let it ruin my life. There's no way you could ever spend it all, and I don't view wealth as something that validates my intelligence.

While I have no doubt he enjoyed his money, he never lived the lifestyle of the rich and famous. If his wife didn't buy furniture, they wouldn't of even had a couch or bed. I have no doubt whatsoever that Steve believed his own hype -- the product was the most important thing. And it shows in almost everything Apple does. I am an unabashed Apple fanboy, and for good reason.

"Now, if you will...... picture the little girls being black."

Funny how this trip1ex just "assumes" everything.

AGREE....ipads are too heavy to really be heavy use products. When the weight gets to .5 lbs...well then we'll have something truely genius.

I had a similar observation this morning, with a different conclusion. There were 3 college age girls (probably from out of town) at the local waterside park where I sometimes eat my breakfast and coffee. Beautiful sunrise, and they were taking pictures of each other with the sunrise to their backs. They spent 5 minutes taking the picture laughing and giggling as the posed for their pictures, then they zoomed away. What they didn't notice, was there was a pod of dolphins swimming at the inlet, or the manatee chowing near the bank.

My conclusion was that a lot people are so wrapped up in their technology (guilty) and posting on their Facebook, they don't really notice whats going on around them!
