Bought a 2017 Macbook Pro 15" with touchbar, custom build to 3.1 processor and 1tb storage. Was dropped off about an hour ago. Out of the box it was a bit smudgy and then noticed scratches on the top and inside.

First time I've had a Mac shipped from the Shanghai warehouse and I'm not impressed. All my others came within the States and I've never had a problem. Could be coincidence.

Already set up a replacement on the phone I'm just fuming a bit while waiting for my shipping label.

Also, apparently, they won't charge you for the replacement anymore then refund when they get the computer. They said they "would start building" the next one once the label marked as shipped. But I don't have the label yet.

Pics of the biggest ones.

Those scratches on the screen of body?? Not that it makes much of a difference as you paid out the nose for a new unit, not a slightly used one. It stinks, but I'm glad they are taking care of you as best as possible.

Looks like it just needs to be wiped down with a moist microfiber cloth to me.

Tried that until I was blue in the face, they are scratches.

Now the touchpad was just smudged, but still, I've never received a computer new from Apple that looked like someone was using the touchpad moments prior.

So it's NOT what you'd expect. In fact, with the millions of products Apple ships, this is rare. AND they are taking care of you.

Simply inexcusable for a custom order.

Whether it came from a warehouse in Shanghai or US, your MBP was originally built by one of several partners in China. Apple didn't QC your MBP, the partner did, and they're under immense pressure to deliver, and that weighs down on the poor soul in the factory. Then it's flown straight from the partner to a local distribution centre.

The big difference here is that Apple won't doubt you, they'll just put it right.

While that does suck, Apple will take care of it.

However, it's not what to expect. That's what's called a fallacy of composition.

I'm sorry for the poor guy or girl in Shenzhen that is probably getting a crack with a whip for this return :-(
Knowing Apple, they're probably not paying for the replacement at all, so it's all coming out of the OEM's pocket.

Sorry to hear that if it's genuine – I'm glad they're taking care of it.

I would not say this is anywhere near typical enough to be called "what to expect."

I have bought many Apple products since the Apple II. Usually no problem but one time I bought a supposed-to-be brand new Mac PRO directly from Apple Korea. When it arrived, there were scratches everywhere on the case. Looked like it was used. I complained and got a full refund.
