I can relate to the OP. laptops don't have to be taken out of the house, for some people they have design advantages that make them more suited for people to use them at home.

As an example i am agrophobie but i have a macbook, obviously im not going to be taking it out so why have it? Simple, i have back problems and sometimes end up in bed for days on end (like right now), with a laptop i can move it to were i want it with little hastle.

having a desktop beside my bed wouldn't be an option.
 
I am proud to say that my MacBook Pro has never been dropped... by me...

A bellhop at a hotel, on the other hand, did drop it from about a foot while it was in its InCase Sleeve (inside a backpack) pulling it out of my car. I tried to pull it out before he could because I didn't trust him, but he beat me to it. Found a dent on it later. I wanted to drive back and complain that he broke a $2k laptop. But I didn't. *sigh*
