He superimposed the Home button symbol over both an app icon, and the shape of the phone, to see if there was an exact match to either one.

(It was much closer to being an app icon shape.)

I don't think Apple ever officially declared that was the case, but I had the same thought as the OP - it has to be an app icon silhouette.

Just wanted to update and say that this is pretty much confirmed now that the new iPod nano's are out. The home screen on the nano features circular buttons and on the home button on the new nano are... Circles!
