I fix up Apple laptops as a hobby and I bought a broken 1.83GHz MacBook Pro on eBay. The previous owner said it had a bad hard drive. Well I got it to boot up, but it would freeze in about 5 minutes or something. All that would happen would be the color wheel spinning. When I restart it, it couldn't find the hard disk drive. I'd have to wait for a while with it off, it would then find the drive. But the whole process would start all over again. I've tried switching drives, switching memory, and switching the hard drive cables. This whole thing has got me stumped. I really don't know what could be wrong. Please give me some advice on what I should do next.

Thank you for all who reply,

Bill

Have you tried booting it off an external USB or FireWire drive with a known good install?
