Funny thing is, I recall distinctly when Samsung and Goldstar (LG) were the bottom of the barrel. Korea's caught up fast.

Nevertheless, I just this past weekend bought one of these to be delivered tomorrow. It was on sale for way cheaper than the closest Samsung model, with better features.

I just bought the 46" version of that TV at Best Buy last week. Haven't had a chance to install it yet but it came with Sony surround sound and blu ray system. I think it's a steal. Please let me know how the picture quality is!

It is amazing. My neighbor just got the 52" (or 55"?), and it's simply incredible. Even better, my wife fell in love with it too, which essentially gives me the green light to pull the trigger on one. :D

EDIT: Oh, and buy any movie from Pixar on Blu-Ray. My neighbor had UP, and it blew me away.

If I were going to buy a LED and had a low budget, I'd go with a Samsung LED, I think the 6300 series are LED and 120hz. I wouldn't ever buy a tv from Best Buy, I'd look online at places like Fry's, Amazon, Vanns, Circuit City, etc. You'll most likely save on taxes, which is as much as 200 bucks off...

And yes, I agree with the other posters saying to stay FAR FAR away from house brands such as Dynex and Insignia.

Check out slickdeals.net. Pretty cool site and t.v. prices are one of the products that the most deals are posted under.

I would stay away from house brands like Insignia or Dynex. They are truly the bottom of the barrel. Start at the mid-tier like LG or Samsung.

The only TV i would buy is a Samsung. Anytime i go anywhere and compare the actual picture, Samsung blows away everything else i see.

My parents have a Samsung, and it's pretty nice. Sadly, my folks have a better TV than I do, though I am looking to change that shortly. My budget isn't as high as the OP, though. :)

Speaking of house brands, has anybody ever heard of the Proscan brand Wal Mart has? I know they are no-name, but this one looks tempting. So does this one.

So, yeah, I really had no idea just how badly my old Samsung DLP had aged. These things creep up on you. I had just thought the light engine was going out based on the way the set would turn itself off once or twice a day with the power button flashing ominously. Now I've got the new one in there and I realize just how bad I'd let it get. The new one looks awesome, and I think I'm in love with having Netflix and Slacker built in.

Now I just need to shop for a wall mount that does the job.

I would personally go with LG. I have a 47" LCD LG and I love it. My sister has a 42" LCD LG, and my parents finally upgraded to a 55" LCD LG just this weekend( got it for $1299 from BestBuy with a free Insignia Blu-Ray player). Of course the panels in our 27" iMac and iPhone 4 are LG. So we are quite satisfied with the quality of LG panels and TV's.

And LG makes the Insignia TVs for Best Buy, so why are we all complaining about insignia?

I know monoprice has some great priced wallmounts. The only problem for me is that my studs are 24" apart, and metal. Most of the mounts only go up to 16" I think. If anyone has any other suggestions that would be great.

Yeah, I have looked at monoprice. Fry's also has one that looks like it supports up to 60" on a single stud. Not sure how much I trust that. I haven't checked my stud spacing yet, but I recall it being reasonably close.

A friend found a place that sells reasonably-priced mounts for wider stud spacing, but hasn't yet sent me the URL. I don't know what you'd do about the metal studs though.

They do? I thought it was a Taiwanese companies panel.

Exactly which is why I'm not bummed that I bought this LED... it should be here Friday and we'll know. My plasma was brilliant.

I looked online and talked to people in the store and they said that majority of the parts are by LG.

Ouch, I wouldn't want to hang my TV on that wall anyway then. Studs that are 24" apart usually means that they are non-weaight-bearing so it seems like it would be less supportive. Maybe that is a stupid assumption based on hanging a <100 TV but they are obviously not as strong as other walls.

Not sure, but I so want one of those LED tvs. They're so bright and vivid...

It reminds me of a double rainbow... ::p

Doesn't matter. Not all LCD panels are made the same, and some brands will get the best LCD panels from the ones they produce by paying more money per panel. Insignia probably gets whatever is left over after Apple, Dell, and everyone else has gone through them.

That makes no sense... how are the "leftovers" any different from the rest.

As far as I know, LCD panels get rated on initial inspection. Some batches are manufactured better than others. The number of LCD panels thrown out immediately after manufacturing is higher than most people realize. Same goes for Intel and their CPUs ---- they throw out a LOT of processors after their initial inspection. I remember when Apple introduced the G5 processors from IBM, and they said that around 30% of their processors didn't meet spec, but they were hoping to improve on that.

Same is true of camera sensors in digital cameras.

I don't know how it all works, but several years ago, I read that Apple (used to) get the better panels from LG for their Cinema Displays.

The same is true in the wine, whisky, and alcohol industry in general, so the fact that this extends to the electronics industry shouldn't surprise anyone.

However, Best Buy is trying to make insignia a premium brand, while making dynex more of a cheap brand. So, I would assume Insignia has better panels from LG than monitors and TVs that you may buy at a store such as Wal-Mart.

Has to be true... my 720p Insignia Plasma was GORGEOUS. In any event, I pick my 55" LED Insignia up at 10am tomorrow (SHARP!). I'll let you all know how it looks.

I picked up at 55" LG with backlit LED lighting a couple weeks ago for $1699 shipped from Adorama or some place. It's not super thin like my 40" bedroom edgelit LED Samsung, but it sits on the wall and only gets watched when I'm not watching the 125" Projector screen. GREAT TV though, highly recommend it. And I'm normally a Samsung guy!

46" Samsung LCD TV or 40" Philips LED TV for the same price??

quick question: 46" Samsung LCD TV or 40" Philips LED TV for the same price??

Don't buy that television because it is not a true LED TV. It is only edge lit by LEDs and not fully lit. You can always tell whether a TV is truly LED by looking at the contrast ratio. If the ratio is equal or greater than 1,000,000:1 then it is a true LED TV. The TV you posted is only 20,000:1 which is the same as my 2 year old non-LED TV. My recommendation would be to look at Vizio's new lineup of LED TVs if you are looking for something affordable.
I haven't read any of the other posts here, so I apologize if this has been said, but there is no such thing as an LED TV. It's an LCD with an LED backlight (Wikpedia it). And no TV has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. There is no standard way of measuring contrast ratio, so often what producers will do is measure the brightness of the screen when it's off, then measure it at maximum brightness. What really matters is the contrast ratio of when both white and black are displayed simultaneously.
