I'm on Optus, I don't get charged for using the Personal Hotspot feature. Which carrier are you with?

Well Apple could've easily make it a device level service like MyWi, they just decided to make carrier activation a requirement that's all.

Did Rogers publish that information anywhere? I have 6GB so I'm fine, but I'm just wondering...

Yup. They made it public a few weeks ago. You need a data plan of at least 1GB. It's completely free. I'm assuming you just contact them in order to set it up.

You don't even need to contact them, it's automatically part of Rogers tethering plan which is available to anyone with 1+GB .

Finally Rogers is throwing us a bone.

I can't remember any cell carrier not charging extra for tethering. Having it be free would be unprecedented. (but not unwelcome, oh well)

My plan includes it for free. I get 2GB a month, use it as I see fit.

Its free on Telus with any data plan 1gig or more and on some of the 500mb packages.

I was only talking about carrier-supported tethering. For as long as carriers have been gouging us for tethering, there have been ways around it. I can understand anti-tethering rules on unlimited plans, but when you pay for a certain amount of data, it should be yours.

Paid tethering serves two purposes: gouge us, and make it less likely we'll use all the data way pay for.

Not a work-around. Optus doesn't charge for tethering. I don't think any of them do here.

If you ever consider jailbreaking, try mywi or tetherme. Both work well and don't require monthly fees other than your cell data.

Mywi worked well while I was at the grand hyatt in dc over the weekend. Didn't have to pay any stupid hotel wifi fees!

Here in Canada on Rogers it's free and that's the way it should be!! U.S carriers are really going the wrong way with this... Basically they are charging you on how you are using your data... I mean 5gb is 5gb... No matter if it's via hotspot, bluetooth, usb or the phone itself... I'ts like ordering a pizza than charge you more to slice it in 4... REDICULOUS!!!
