I don't see why anyone would think it would be any different to the "old" tethering options (which most networks charged for).

Anyway, as already said, it actually is free if your network allows it for free.

For usage on YOUR phone only. Not bs at all. If you want to use the data on other devices then sign up for a tethering package.
THROUGH your phone. Why should they care if you're tethering another device or using the data yourself? You either go over your monthly or you don't.

With the jailbreak coming out soon, I can't wait to use my unlimited data to its full potential.

I'll be hooking up my PS3 to my iPhone and see how it goes :D

Here in Canada on Rogers it's free and that's the way it should be!! U.S carriers are really going the wrong way with this... Basically they are charging you on how you are using your data... I mean 5gb is 5gb... No matter if it's via hotspot, bluetooth, usb or the phone itself... I'ts like ordering a pizza than charge you more to slice it in 4... REDICULOUS!!!

agreed its not like should care if you go over and have to pay extra for it, they should actually encourage more people to exceed there monthly plan

In Uk

Im on orange Uk network they do a nice small tethering bundle for £5 for 500mb.
Its enough for me. Thats around $3.

Why do the US have large tethering plans for silly money ?

Well Apple could've easily make it a device level service like MyWi, they just decided to make carrier activation a requirement that's all.

You signed a contract that explicitly defines what your data can and can't be used for. Tethering is specifically listed as a restricted use that requires changes to your plan.
It would be improper for Apple to unilaterally include the feature. If Apple allowed this functionality w/o carrier consent, you would still be in clear violation of your TOS.

BTW - This clause was created when data plans included unlimited data. It was a reasonable restriction at the time. However now that ATT is charging by volume, the second charge for tethering feels like double dipping.

On the bright side the cost of the service is reasonable, assuming you use over 2GB of data. Think of it as pre-paying for 4GB of data and getting Tethering included at no extra charge.
