Has this happen to anyone else? I redeemed the new Thor movie from my 4k blu ray in the Movies Anywhere app. Any other time I did this it redeems and plays in 4k on iTunes and vudu. But Thor redeemed in HD for some reason.

Apple TV 4k of course.

Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm content is not available in 4K HDR on iTunes. I would assume this is for competitive reasons: because Disney is unhappy with Apple limiting the HD/4K content to the same price, to push people to Vudu (where 4K is $25), and ultimately to Disney's upcoming streaming service.

Disney also pulled all of their content from Netflix recently, for likely the same reasons. See the following for more info:

Thanks for explaining what was going on. Guess I’m glad I bought the 4k blu ray.

If you have a supported device, I think your best bet is to sign up for Vudu, sign up for Movies Anywhere, and link Vudu and iTunes in Movies Anywhere. Buy the Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Lucasfilm content on Vudu in 4K HDR (UHD) for $25, watch it in 4K HDR on your supported device, and then if/when it's available in iTunes in 4K HDR hopefully you'll get it for free.

I've heard that if you buy a "HDX" or "HD" movie on non-iTunes digital services, you don't get the 4K HDR iTunes version for free even when it's available on iTunes. Not sure if that's true for standard Blu-Ray codes too. If you're using a code from a UHD Blu-Ray box, you do get the iTunes 4K HDR version when available.

I'm strictly digital since DVDs, and tried to stick with Netflix for streaming and iTunes for purchase as my only sources. This mess with Disney has forced me to branch out (and pay more)...

Hope that helps!

As already explained, iTunes currently doesn't have Disney movies in 4K (although I suspect it's only a matter of time). But if you redeemed in Movies Anywhere, it should have recorded the 4K entitlement, and you should have it in 4K in your Vudu library (and if iTunes gets Disney 4K movies in the future, you should get it there too).

Does the Vudu client on the Apple TV support 4k? If so your 4k MA redeem should play 4K in the Vudu app.

Vudu 4K and Dolby Atmos on Vudu are why I still keep a Roku next to my AppleTV...

You are correct about Vudu, HDX/HD movies only redeem in 1080p on each other. I hope my movies will be upgraded to 4k for free but because not all iTunes movies are 4k I’ve been buying movies on 4k Blu-Rays.
