Is anyone having issues getting mail on the phone, when the phone is just sleeping?

I've noticed that when you get mail the phone does nothing to notify you, but once you hit the home button all the emails start coming in.

This has been on a iphone 5 and 5s, setup as a new device. No other email accounts setup on phone.

Email is set to push

Seems to work fine here through iOS 6 and 7 using iPhone 5.

Nope. I have a connection to my corporate exchange email, my personal Office365 email, and a Microsoft Live email, and all are working fine.
