I'm curious how the claim works. My sister dropped her watch and the side is damaged. She called the 800 number for AppleCare, and if this matters, it was later in the evening when she made the call. This was a week or so ago, just for time and date reference. The rep truly didn't know procedures and put her on hold several times to go ask. The final answer given to my sister was that she needed to take the watch only, no accessories, to a local UPS office. They would have the packaging she needed and create a shipping label. Once apple received the watch, they would send her a new one.

This seems wrong for many reasons, and she has yet to do anything with the watch (mainly bc she just had a baby!) But (1) how does Apple know it's her watch? The serial number would point to me, since I gave it to her. (2) When/how is payment collected?

Seems odd to just randomly go drop it with UPS and expect to get another watch from Apple.

Has anyone gone through AppleCare? What did you do?

I have had my watch replaced twice with apple care. Did the online chat. They sent me a new watch the next day and i placed mine in the box and sent it back with prepaid postage.

Small sample size but I've found the online chat experience much more streamlined and effective than calling.

for both your phone and watch it turns off once you unpair the device. The iPhone auto turns it off once you reset the phone.

your activation lock might not even be on.

just because you installed watch os 2 does not mean activation lock is enabled.

everyone who reads this, please do the following
go to the watch app
select your watch
if you do not see "mark as missing" this means your activation lock IS NOT TURNED ON

to turn on activation lock after you install watch os 2, you need to unpair the apple watch and pair it again
