that happens to me from time to time... sometimes it comes up locked, like its not activated... then i re-start it and everything is normal

the same

New iPhone 3G 8GB user. Took the phone out of its box tonight, set it up, got my apps synced (had an ipod touch before), and used the phone for about 3 hours. I was in phone delight. I plugged it into the Macbook to recharge it and walked away.

I came back to it a couple hours later, and it wouldn't wake up. I couldn't turn it on with the power button like I normally would the Touch. Like you guys, panic set in. :)

I did a search on 'ipod died' and found this thread. Thank you so much for the two button reset advice. The phone has come back to life and I'm happy to put away my return box/sticker. ;)

my iphone died and came back to life for no apparent reason.. had just finished a call.. battery was about half way down.. phone went blank and buttons wouldnt respond .. plugged it into mains and still no response.. searched on here for any tips and while doing that it turned back on again..

WEIRD!

Could this be related to the "Airplane Mode"

I have had my Iphone for about 2 weeks. Tonite i had just finished a call, and noticed that I had the "airplane" mode switched on. I flipped it back to normal and went on my way. When I went to check something...it was completely unresponsive.... scared the _____ out of me!

I had already tried holding the buttons in various ways.... but after reading about it here... I held the buttons for like... forever.... ya know.... like, maybe 30 seconds or more... finally.... the forbidden fruit!

time to change my shorts!

thanks for the thread! the phone's not dead!

thanks for the thread. only had the phone for 12 days, not happy. is this a sign of things to come? has anyone contacted apple to find out if this issue can be resolved with a download? seems like more and more folks are running into this glitch.

Life in my ipod!

Blimey, this just happened to my ipod and i lost my reciept so i thought i couldn't return it! I did exactly what you said, my screen was white and it was on charge, it would not come on! The two button thing worked straight away! I thought i had lost my best friend forever! ha ha

Thanks for the tip!

Screen went black on me this morning. It's a 2G (8GB) that is jailbroken/unlocked I tried hard restarts and got the phone into recovery mode. I tried re-installing a backup and then restoring with 3.1.2, but the screen is still blank.

Thinking about ordering a new LCD screen. Any suggestions?

Thank you, my iphone died too

Thanks for thsi post. I was taking pics with my iPhone 3GS, put it in my coat pocket, took it out and it was suddenly completely unresponsive! Thought I'd have to trek over to the Genius Bar, but thank goodness it was this simple!

Ah... so happy to have my phone back!

I thought my iPhone died too

It happened to me this morning. I was thinking of going to the store/shop to have it checked but I thought of trying to find if a similar situation has been experienced by other iPhone owners and I found your solution. I tried it and it worked. Thanks a lot!

Yes

Well, it happened to me today. Took it out of my pocket and nothing. I was ready to take it to a repair shop when I thought, what the heck, let's see what Google says, and here I am.

Thanks, Damado. I never would have thought to do that.

Has anyone figured out why this happens? I'm a little concerned...

Everyone once in a while, this should be done--ie pressing the sleep/wake button and the home button until the silver apple appears. This is the iPhone's 'battery pull', like when you pull the battery from a BlackBerry. Sometimes so much stuff is running that you don't know about, that the phone needs a reboot to clear its cache, like your computer. Actually, a better example would be rebooting your computer because it's running slowly.

Just picked it up and pushed the bottom button and nothing happened.

I tried hitting every button and nothing, hooked it up to the wall charged, the computer, nothing.

Finally I just held the bottom button and the top button and finally a little silver apple showed up on the screen after about 5+ seconds of holding both buttons down. Then my custom backgound showed up with the slider and everything appears normal.....wierd though.

Battery was at half charge.

Has this happened to anyone?

exactly the same happenes to me its like its dead for about 1-15 minutes and after a bit you have to hold home & sleep button down for a bit and then it takes ages to turn on and then its fine, dont really worry about it it usally happens to people who dont turn it off for months like me and it happens to my sister

Grateful!

All happiness gone from the world - in middle of response to e-mail - when blackness filled the screen. Google'd the issue and found this forum; followed the "directions" of holding both buttons and life restored!! Thank you!!

Thank god for this sight

Called verizon NO CLUE ,,,,i go here and its fixed...nothing more to say...thank u to the nice people on here

Happend to me twice on Iphone 4, hard reset solves the problem.
I also tried to call my number when Iphone is "black dead" and I have a normal ringing signal but Iphone is irresponsible.
I hope this is a software error which :apple: will resolve soon. :(

thank you for the iphone restart help!

My iphone died suddenly for no reason. I looked on this forum for help. Got the advice to do a hard start which is pressing the top and bottom button at the same time for about five seconds. The phone turned back on when I did it and now it's working just like normal again. What a relief. I thought I was going to have to buy a battery or who knows what else.

thought my iphone died

Holy cow I panicked when I thought my phone died. thank you for your website!! I pressed the top and bottom buttons and it came back on. so Freaky I have no idea why it would do that (it's only 4 months old) THANK YOU!!

Yup, the standard holding of the home and lock button will turn it back on..
