Math fits with rumors, but what if it's not just alone display but also iMac?

If that comes true maybe the wait was worth it.
Finally end to those pesky black bars in shows and movies.

The longer you look at it the better it looks, also if they leave iMac same then next to the new display it will look even more outdated than it looks now, and people would wait for iMac to match it later if not sooner.

What do I wish most from these displays is for the black to be black.

I get that this aspect ratio appeals to content producers, but the vast majority of content I watch on my 5K iMac is 16:9 (or 4:3 for older content). So this would add black bars, not remove them.

Not that I really care about black bars as long as the usable area for 16:9 content is still the same size; but it seems like adding more vertical space is a better idea than adding more horizontal space, considering most content still scrolls vertically and most photos aren't shot in widescreen.

Sounds great, but unless you have the new Mac Pro to drive it...

As a consumer, my late '12 27" iMac is fine. So is my iPhone 7. I can't imagine buying this stuff and will continue to use what I have until the very end of usability.

As a music producer it would be great to have Logic Pro and all the plug ins in the same screen but upgrading the current iMac is more realistic to my wallet though!

I’d definitely buy one if it starts at $2500 or lower. With SSD standard and 16 GB RAM.

I still miss the 16:10 iMacs... I don't see a whole lot of design changes coming to the iMac soon, but we'll see.

Yes vertical height is more important for a lot a use cases. Particularly coding, writing and websites. I rarely have to scroll sideways, but often have to vertically. I was hoping they would go for a retina equivalent of the old 30" 16:10 Apple cinema displays.

I don't think the 31.5" display (for the Mac Pro) is going to be an "ultrawide" format.

It will be the same form factor as the current display, just a little wider -and- a little higher.

If a future iMac gets upgraded to 31.5", I imagine they'll use the same display panel...

16:10 is where its at much prefer that aspect ratio. For photographers the squished format is just a waste of real estate which is why would prefer a headless mac to buy a suitable display for my needs.

Plus the 5k display is already too much as it is, just pushes the hardware harder would prefer they got the 5k display running like butter first because it just doesnt. Moving 14mp at 60fps is a shed load as it is.

16:10 is one of the main reasons I still use my 2008 iMac. No need for widescreen here. If I could find a good deal I'd even pick up an early 2009 24" iMac just as a side machine.

It would take Apple another 5 years to acknowledge that curved screen is the way to go for ergonomic ultrawide.

I hate the idea of people freaking out when widescreen formats do not match up with their display. This dates back to the 80's with VHS using pan and scan over the much superior original aspect rations(widescreen).

  • Taller aspect ratios are more useful for monitor real estate.
  • Critical viewing of content should be done in a darken room hence no black bars
  • iMac still cannot naively play UHD content unless you pirate that content. Black bars are the least of your issues....it's getting content to at least go along with your high resolution display.

Would be great for more screen real estate, especially for Logic Pro X but we would go back to 2014 iMacs first issues, overheating, laggy UI, screen uniformity...

Jeff Benjamin at 9to5Mac believes the standalone display will be 6240×2880 native resolution as that would be 2.17:1 / 19.53:9 with a 3120×1440 "Retina" resolution at the same ~218ppi of the current 5K iMac display.

I plan on keeping my 2017 iMac 5K is the next one is also 5K, but if it moves to this display, then I will replace it.

Wasn't there a rumor of apple working on an integrated graphics card within this sort of monitor?

I would prefer something more like this.

But in reality i never notice the bezels when actually using the computer.
And as someone else said, this should only be on an imac pro with a decent video card. I had a maxed imac and now an imac pro and I can say without doubt the experience on the imac pro is much better. Super fluid.

I would be concerned with a 6k monitor without the GPU to back it up.

There was and is something I think would be amazing. I doubt it will happen though as it will make the screen too thick, unless they build it into the stand.
An eGPU solution in a monitor would be my dream set up. 1 TB3 cable - job done

Yes there were, but I honestly never expected the rumor to become fact. It would just raise the price and when the GPU becomes outdated... Much better, IMO, to just keep it a pure monitor.

And honestly, it's unnecessary now with eGPUs.

6240x2880 works out at around the same number of pixels as dual 4K screens. Yes you need decent graphics to push that comfortably, but it's not exotic territory.

Sounds fine to me, but this is definitely going to be only for the iMac Pro, which is also fine for me :)

One of the Kuo/Kwo/whatever rumors is the iMac is line for a big screen improvement. I bet that's what this is.
