I had an Apple Gift Card coming from points accrued on a CC account so I waited until this past week to place my pencil order. Apple's estimating end of January for shipment. Any odds on the chance of an early Christmas for anyone?

I don't think that is the case. Apple appears to have less stock only because it is distributing Pencils world wide, and has accepted a long list of back order (essentially waiting list) to be filled.
Bestbuy, on the other hand, does not accept back order. They do get small shippments of pencils from Apple regularly, but they sell out within hours every time. In order to get one, you really need to be watching their website closely, like waiting for a lottery.
Don't get it either. Ordered both the pencil and keyboard from Apple about Thanksgiving. Got the pencil from BB about a week ago, cancelled the Apple order. Expecting the KB from BB tomorrow; if it's in good shape I'll cancel the keyboard at Apple.

Yep, I ordered both the pencil and the smart keyboard on 11/23. Ship dates indicated are 12/28-1/4. I figured I actually would receive them prior to that given past history with ship dates on apple products tend to be very conservative. Well, it appears I likely will not receive them until the 28th at least since they are still in processing.
I haven't been actively checking the BB website on a frequent basis, but when I have checked they have been sold out.

I just ordered from BB on 12/20 @ 2:29am . Received it via UPS one day saver 12/21 @ 4pm.
Just gotta check BB at unusual times I guess.
They do sell out extremely fast so be ready with your payment and shipping info profile when you find it in stock.

your best option is to keep an eye on other retailers that seem to be getting small batches sporadically
I wasn't going to get the ipp because the pencils weren't available, then one morning in uk a third party official retailer was selling them online and I managed to get two. After a few minutes they were all sold out, so you have to be quick.

My gift card was the deal maker after playing with the pencil at an Apple Store. And as Apple usually delivers ahead of their estimates, I'll leave this alone for the time being.

Usually Apple does ship ahead of estimates, but as of today I doubt if I'll revieve it ahead of the earliest date. Ordered 11/23 and have stated ship dates 12/28-01/04. Will be very surprised if I receive before or even by the 28th.. It's still in processing.
like i'm finally getting the Pro today and wanted to stop by Best Buy because they had it in stock and now they don't. Also sold out online and Apple actually thinks i'm going to wait until early Feb. for it to deliver.
Ordered my Pencil on 11/15 with estimated arrival between 12/18-12/24. Just got shipping email, delivery of 12/28.
I had the same range, maybe a day earlier. My shipping email on the 21st for next day was 12/28. However, the FedEx Delivery Manager email says 12/24. In my experience with the iPP, the FedEx Delivery Manager is more accurate.
I ordered a keyboard today with AT&T with a ship date in first week of Jan. They actually shipped it a few hours later!
The rep said that the pencil will be in stock next week. Ironic that I'm ordering from AT&T for my Verizon iPad. So much better than the long wait at Apple.

No kidding. I ordered my iPad Pro and Apple pencil direct fro mApple a couple of weeks agao. The Pro shipped in a couple of days while the pencil was 4-5 week estimate. BB got them in stock online, ordered on a Friday, had it the next Tuesday, and cancelled my pencil order.
I think Apple may also pumping pencils into the Apple stores before fulfilling online orders.
