How is the iPad 2 with iOS 7.1? Is it laggy since the hardware is outdated? I am thinking of picking one up for $299 at Walmart (or price matching at Apple Store). I would be using it for basic tasks such as email and internet (no games).

Installed 7.1 on mine last night, it's very fast and smooth, it's like a new iPad! This could partly be down to fact I wiped it first, but still, it's nice. Do it.

The iPad 2 has just been officially discontinued and replaced by the 16GB iPad 4 at the same price point.

That's true but there still millions of 2s out there so the question remains relevant. On my daughters iPad 2 iOS 7.1 seems to be running fine without any issues. I was messing with it the other day and found it to be satisfactory.

Updated my iPad 2 to iOS 7.1 but couldn't tell you much about its performance since it's mostly used by my wife to watch Netflix.

If here is something specific you'd like me to check, I'd be happy to do so.

Had an iPad 2 before I recently upgraded to an Air; was very happy with it but stayed on iOS 5 as I didn't like or want to try 6. Since lots of app required iOS7 I eventually switched to iOS7 and it's well worth it. No noticeable difference in speed, but loved the changes (control centre, app switcher etc.)

I only swapped up to the Air as I had the offer of a free one, otherwise I'd have happily stayed on the iPad 2. The Air is much faster at browsing etc., but even the iPad 2 was more than adequate.

I upgraded my iPad2 a while back and it runs okay. Sometimes a lag, occasionally a pause, but sufficient for what I need.

My wife recently got an iPad 2 - updated to 7.1 as soon as I took it out of the box. I was very leery of getting a 2... it's 3+ year old tech! BUT... surprisingly, it runs 7.1 VERY smoothly. At first I was bummed when I saw the news today, but the more I though about it, even at $399, that's $100 more than we paid ($299 at Walmart). I think the iPad 2 is still very worth the $299 price. I'd LOVE to see Walmart et al discount the remaining stock - $249 would be sweet (and a price match for me, if they do it very soon lol).
