What do you guys think of portrait mode now that the 7+ has been out for about a year? I didn't use it as much as I thought I would and don't think I would mind having a standard 8 this time around.

I have a 6s so I only get to use it on my wife's 7 Plus but I'm envious every time she shows me photos or I use her phone to take pictures of our daughter. That will all be rectified in a month when I get the X though.

It's too buggy for me and the only thing it does right are water bottles but I am also on 10.1.1 so

I agree it needs refinement with distance and lighting. I think Apple can easily the little details. Portrait Mode has a lot of potential in my opinion.

I love it, it was the reason I upgraded from my iPhone 6 Plus, in those twelve months I have taken a few hundred photos just in portrait/Bokeh affect mode.

I like the feature and it can produce some very nice images. The main problem for me is the image blur when trying to take photos of a toddler that won't sit still, along with the severe delay between pressing the shutter and it actually taking an image. This is mainly due to the narrow depth of field but if Image Stabilisation is introduced/improved and the shutter lag is reduced then it'll be a lot more useful.

I think it's so good and such a breakthrough feature that I would never buy a phone that doesn't have Portrait Mode. In low light it doesn't work that well (or at all in some case cases), but with good light (and obviously especially outside) I've been able to take beautiful shots that would be impossible with any other smartphone camera.

And with a bit of VSCO cam editing it looks even better.

And by the looks of it they will be updating portrait mode "Portrait Lighting is rumored to be a Portrait Mode refinement that uses the dual-lens camera depth-sensing capabilities to create different lighting effects. It'll take advantage of machine learning to go well beyond adding bokeh.

It supports Contour Light, Natural Light, Stage Light, Stage Light Mono, and Studio Light, according to the iOS 11 golden master beta leaked to 9to5Mac.

it sounds interesting.

Superb photo. I love portrait mode and yes some limitations when you look really close and it can struggle to doffeerntiate sometimes. However, it is a joy to have this feature. I am especially looking forward to improvements with portrait in iPhone X edition or whatever it is called.

Lol, well to be fair, if we all were taking pictures of such a beautiful subject we could possibly have nice photos even with an iPhone 4 camera. ;) But yes, you've got mad skills with the IPhone 7 Plus's portrait mode.

I've gotten some nice photos of my naughty cat indoors on the dining room table under chandelier lighting, with proper edges on the subject and proper blurring of the background. Unfortunately, animals aren't supposed to be on the table! But when I catch my cat there, I figure I may as well make the most of the opportunity. My humans won't cooperate, though, and unlike that lovely lady with the pretty smile in your picture, I get a lot of eye rolling and grumbling as I try to document a day in the life of my family.

At the very least, I have found the zoom lens indispensable in bringing scenes closer to me that I couldn't otherwise capture clearly. These guys, on the buoy, for example, weren't even that easy to see with my eyes. I trusted my 7 Plus to bring them in closer and was not disappointed. No, that photo won't stand up to being blown up into a large print, but it's a nice reminder of something I've never seen before in my half a century on the planet and likely won't ever have a chance to see again in my next half century.

Nice pic.
Now, next time just remember about the horizon… ;)
