I had a first gen 500GB XT in a 13" MBP and loved it! This was before the price of SSD's drastically dropped. If you need 500GB, I think it's a great deal and is a very noticeable difference over a traditional 5400 drive.

I put that XT in my PS3 (after I got an SSD then my rMBP) and it made my PS3 UI slightly less laggy and installed games load up a little quicker.

I bought my 840 for a good deal ($270) so I don't feel too badly about it. I'll take any speed boost I can get as long as I don't have to break the bank for it. But in the future, I think I'll stick to Seagate's hybrid drives. The cost is significantly less for the storage that you're getting, and the speed difference - at least compared with the Samsung 840 line - really isn't that significant (unfortunately!), unless you find yourself rebooting frequently.

This was incredibly helpful! thanks! also from what i've seen that is a steal on that drive! battery difference sounds huge though.
Did you notice a drop in battery life from the stock HDD to the Hybrid?

There's a new 960GB SSD coming out that was already listed at less than 520 EUR (including 19% German VAT).

I've had all three Seagate hybrid drives. The 750 is superior to the 500 -- faster and vibration free (the 500 vibrated a lot, and it wasn't just mine). The 1TB drive seems neither faster or slower than the 750, so it's probably fine even with the lower rotational velocity. Identical power consumption.

OK, but depending on what you do, the 7K1000 might be a better choice than the new "SSHD".

Is this the drive you are referring to on OWC?

Can you elaborate on how this would be a better choice?

Reasonably assuming that both disks have similar density, the 7K1000 should be faster than the "SSHD" when it has to access the platters.

If you are working with a lot of data where the "SSHD" flash is of little help, the 7K1000 might be better, even if the Seagate will probably be faster for boot, login, starting the most used applications, accessing some frequently used files and directories.

I'm keeping the 7K1000 even if I also need what the Seagate has to offer because I think the Hitachi might help me run virtualization better (of course what I would really need is an SSD now that one could get 960GB for less than $600, but I'm afraid of having to switch relatively quickly to something larger, and for now the 7K1000 is doing pretty good).

I didn't notice any difference in battery life between the stock drive and the Momentus XT. I'm sure there's a difference of some sort, but for my usage (presumably "normal usage") it isn't significant one way or another. Based on benchmarks it seems like the 840 uses about the average power usage of a HDD when reading/writing, but uses practically nothing when idling. That explains the battery gains.
