Meta today started rolling out a highly-requested "Following" tab in its Threads app, allowing users to view posts from accounts they follow in reverse-chronological order. The app continues to show algorithmically recommended posts under the "For you" tab.

The addition of a "Following" tab brings Threads more in line with its rival Twitter, and it will make the app more useful for keeping track of the latest posts in real time. The new tab is still in the process of rolling out as a server-side change, so it is not yet visible to all users, but updating the app and tapping the home button in the bottom menu might help.

Meta launched Threads earlier this month as an alternative to Twitter, which has faced several controversial changes since being acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk last year. Earlier this week, Twitter changed its name to "X" and said it would become a platform for "everything," including audio, video, messaging, payments, and more.

Threads is integrated with Instagram, resulting in the platform already becoming the largest Twitter alternative, with over 100 million users signed up.

And of course like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, they (intentionally) half-ass it.

It's not the default, it can't be made the default and requires multiple clicks to get to it every time you open the app.

Yet another instance of a social media company thinking they know how someone wants to use the app better than that person does.

It's more related to the platform and how it scales. It's not just records in a SQL database where you can just ORDER BY Date DESC. It's a whole mess of intermediate systems with only part of the data, and algorithms to try to make the right data available when it might want to be seen.

Why does the Threads app link in the article go to a non-Meta Threads app in the App Store?

This won't be a real Twitter competitor until they allow lists. Once they do that, Twitter is toast.

But I'm not optimistic. I have a friend who's a product designer at Insta and have mentioned the need for lists for several years, and he acted like it's the first time he'd heard the idea. 🤷‍♂️

They managed what Netflix, Hulu, Max et al have not managed after all these years. Blocking access in the EU even with a VPN. I thought I was outsmarting them by setting up a completely new threads / insta account while faking my GPS location and it worked for a day until they blocked it again 😵‍💫

@MR you linked to the wrong Threads app in the article.

Kind of funny considering you literally wrote an article about users making this mistake a couple of days ago

To those still using Threads (I am), you need to click either the Threads logo at the top or the home button to reveal "For you" and "Following" timeline options.
